Cooling fan control system Inspection

1.  Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.

2.  Perform the KOEO or KOER self-test using the M-MDS and verify that none of the following DTCs is detected. (See DTC INSPECTION.)

•  P0117:00
•  P0118:00
•  P0480:00
•  P0481:00
―  If any of the following DTCs can be verified, perform the applicable DTC inspection. (See DTC P0117:00 [PCM (SKYACTIV-G)].) (See DTC P0118:00 [PCM (SKYACTIV-G)].) (See DTC P0480:00 [PCM (SKYACTIV-G)].) (See DTC P0481:00 [PCM (SKYACTIV-G)].)

3.  Verify that the engine coolant temperature is less than 97°C {206°F}, and then start the engine and idle it.

4.  Verify that the cooling fan does not operate when the A/C switch is turned off.

•  If it is operating, perform the following inspections.

Inspection items
•  Cooling fan relay No.1 (stuck closed)
•  Cooling fan relay No.2 (stuck closed)
•  Wiring harness between cooling fan relay No.1 and cooling fan motor (short to power supply)
•  Wiring harness between cooling fan relay No.2 and cooling fan motor (short to power supply)
•  Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
•  A/C pressure sensor
•  Climate control unit
•  CAN communication (PCM PID: A/C_REQ constantly ON)

5.  Verify that the cooling fan operates at a low speed when the L_SPD_FAN is turned from OFF to ON using the M-MDS simulation function. (See SIMULATION INSPECTION.) (See SIMULATION TABLE [PCM (SKYACTIV-G)].)

•  If the operation cannot be verified, perform the following inspections.

Cooling fan status

Inspection items

OFF
•  Cooling fan relay No.1 (stuck open)
•  Cooling fan motor (internal open circuit)
•  Wiring harnesses between battery and cooling fan relay No.1, and cooling fan relay No.1 and cooling fan motor (fuse blown due to open circuit and short to ground)
•  Wiring harness between cooling fan motor and ground (open circuit and poor ground)

6.  Verify that the cooling fan operates at a high speed when the H_SPD_FAN is turned from OFF to ON using the M-MDS simulation function. (See SIMULATION INSPECTION.) (See SIMULATION TABLE [PCM (SKYACTIV-G)].)

•  If the operation cannot be verified, perform the following inspections.

Cooling fan status

Inspection items

OFF
•  Cooling fan relay No.2 (stuck open)
•  Cooling fan motor (internal open circuit)
•  Wiring harnesses between battery and cooling fan relay No.2, and cooling fan relay No.2 and cooling fan motor (fuse blown due to open circuit and short to ground)
•  Wiring harness between cooling fan motor and ground (open circuit and poor ground)

Part Inspection

1.  Verify that the battery is fully charged. (See BATTERY INSPECTION.)

2.  Disconnect the cooling fan motor connector (3 terminals).

3.  Install a tester and battery to the cooling fan motor connector (3 terminals) as shown in the figure.

4.  Verify that each cooling fan motor operates smoothly at the standard current.

•  If there is any malfunction, replace the applicable part.
Cooling fan motor standard current
8.3—10.1 A [12 V]
