Rear ultrasonic sensor malfunction detection function

•  If the parking assist unit detects that there is a malfunction in the rear ultrasonic sensor circuit, the sound is activated in the following pattern.

Malfunction detection location

Parking sensor buzzer sound pattern

Rear corner ultrasonic sensor (LH)
Rear ultrasonic sensor (LH)
Rear ultrasonic sensor (RH)
Rear corner ultrasonic sensor (RH)

Note
•  If there is any vehicle malfunction complaint lodged by a customer, perform FOREWORD [PARKING SENSOR] malfunction diagnosis according to the troubleshooting procedure. (See FOREWORD [PARKING SENSOR].)

―  Open circuit or short to ground in wiring harness between parking assist unit terminal C and rear ultrasonic sensor (RH) terminal B
•  Rear ultrasonic sensor and rear corner ultrasonic sensor ground system malfunction
―  Open circuit or short to ground in wiring harness between parking assist unit terminal F and rear corner ultrasonic sensor (LH) terminal A
―  Open circuit or short to ground in wiring harness between parking assist unit terminal F and rear corner ultrasonic sensor (LH) terminal A
―  Open circuit or short to ground in wiring harness between parking assist unit terminal B and rear corner ultrasonic sensor (LH) terminal A
―  Open circuit or short to ground in wiring harness between parking assist unit terminal D and rear corner ultrasonic sensor (LH) terminal A
•  Parking assist unit malfunction

Diagnostic Procedure

Step

Inspection

Action

1
VERIFY REAR ULTRASONIC SENSOR CONDITION
•  Visually inspect the rear ultrasonic sensor condition.
•  Is there any dirt, damage (scratch, deformation), and freezing on the sensor?
Yes
If there is any dirt or ice adhesion:
•  Remove any dirt or ice and verify if the malfunction recurs.
•  If the malfunction recurs, go to the next step.
If there is any damage:
•  Replace the sensor.
No
Go to the next step.
2
INSPECT CONNECTOR CONNECTION CONDITION
•  Verify the connector connection conditions of the parking assist unit, rear ultrasonic sensor short-cord, and rear ultrasonic sensor.
•  Are the connection conditions normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part.
3
INSPECT WIRING HARNESS BETWEEN PARKING ASSIST UNIT AND REAR ULTRASONIC SENSOR FOR OPEN CIRCUIT
•  Switch the ignition off.
•  Disconnect the negative battery cable.
•  Disconnect the connectors of the rear ultrasonic sensor and parking assist unit.
•  Inspect for continuity between the following wiring harnesses:
―  Parking assist unit terminal E and rear corner ultrasonic sensor (LH) terminal B
―  Parking assist unit terminal G and rear corner ultrasonic sensor (RH) terminal B
―  Parking assist unit terminal A and rear ultrasonic sensor (LH) terminal B
―  Parking assist unit terminal C and rear ultrasonic sensor (RH) terminal B
―  Parking assist unit terminal F and terminal A for each sensor
―  Parking assist unit terminal F and terminal A for each sensor
―  Parking assist unit terminal B and terminal A for each sensor
―  Parking assist unit terminal D and terminal A for each sensor
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
•  Refer to the wiring diagram and verify whether or not there is a mid-connector between the parking assist unit and rear ultrasonic sensor.
If there is a mid-connector
―  Determine the malfunctioning part by inspecting the mid-connector and the terminal for corrosion, damage, or pin disconnection, and the mid-wiring harness for a open circuit.
―  Repair or replace the wiring harness which has a malfunction.
If there is no mid-connector
―  Repair or replace the wiring harness which has a malfunction.
4
INSPECT WIRING HARNESS BETWEEN PARKING ASSIST UNIT AND REAR ULTRASONIC SENSOR FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Inspect for continuity between the following wiring harnesses:
―  Parking assist unit terminal E and ground
―  Parking assist unit terminal G and ground
―  Parking assist unit terminal A and ground
―  Parking assist unit terminal C and ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
•  Refer to the wiring diagram and verify whether or not there is a mid-connector between the parking assist unit and rear ultrasonic sensor.
If there is a mid-connector
―  Determine the malfunctioning part by inspecting the mid-connector and the terminal for corrosion, damage, or pin disconnection, and the mid-wiring harness for a short to ground.
―  Repair or replace the wiring harness which has a malfunction.
If there is no mid-connector
―  Repair or replace the wiring harness which has a malfunction.
No
Go to the next step.
5
DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS REAR ULTRASONIC SENSOR OR PARKING ASSIST UNIT
•  Reconnect all the disconnected connectors.
•  Connect the negative battery cable.
•  Switch the ignition ON (engine off or on).
•  Selector lever is in the R position.
•  Refer to the parking assist unit inspection and verify the generated pulse for each sensor.
•  Can the generated pulse be verified?
Yes
Replace the parking assist unit.
No
Replace the rear ultrasonic sensor.
