A/C DOES NOT WORK SUFFICIENTLY

DESCRIPTION
•  The A/C compressor magnetic clutch does not engage when the A/C is turned on.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
•  Continuous memory DTC is stored
•  Poor ground of A/C magnetic clutch
•  Open A/C magnetic clutch
•  Refrigerant pressure switch malfunction (stuck open)
•  A/C switch malfunction (stuck open)
•  Evaporator temperature sensor and A/C amplifier malfunction
•  Open circuit in wiring harness between refrigerant pressure switch and PCM terminal 1AO
•  Open circuit of blower motor fan switch and resistor (if blower motor does not operate)
•  A/C relay malfunction (stuck open)
•  Improper refrigerant charging amount
•  Seized A/C compressor
•  PCM malfunction

Diagnostic procedure

STEP

INSPECTION

ACTION

1
Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.
Perform the KOEO/KOER self test.
Are any continuous memory DTCs present?
Yes
Go to the appropriate DTC inspection.
No
Go to the next step.
2
Disconnect the A/C compressor connector.
Start the engine and turn the A/C switch on.
Is there correct voltage at the A/C compressor magnetic clutch terminal?
Specification
10.5 V or more
Yes
Inspect for ground condition of the magnetic clutch on the A/C compressor.
•  If the ground condition has a malfunction:
―  Repair or replace the ground condition.
•  If the ground condition is normal:
―  Inspect the magnetic clutch coil for open circuit.
―  Repair or replace the magnetic clutch coil, if necessary.
No
Go to the next step.
3
Disconnect the refrigerant pressure switch connector.
Connect a jumper wire between A/C high-pressure switch terminals.
Connect a jumper wires between refrigerant pressure switch terminals.
Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.
Perform the PID/DATA Monitor and Record Procedure and access the AC_REQ PID.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Turn the A/C switch on and set the blower fan at any speed.
Does the AC_REQ PID read On?
Yes
Inspect the refrigerant pressure switch operation.
•  If the refrigerant pressure switch has a malfunction:
•  If the refrigerant pressure switch is normal:
―  Go to the next step.
No
Inspect the following:
•  A/C switch is stuck open
•  Evaporator temperature sensor and A/C amplifier
•  Open circuit in wiring harness between refrigerant pressure switch and PCM terminal 1AO
•  Open circuit of blower motor fan switch and resistor (if blower motor does not operate)
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.
4
Remove a jumper wire from the refrigerant pressure switch connector.
Reconnect the connector to the refrigerant pressure switch.
Start the engine and turn the A/C switch on.
Does the fan operate?
Yes
Inspect the A/C relay for stuck open.
Replace the A/C relay, if necessary.
No
Inspect the following:
•  Refrigerant charging amount
•  A/C compressor for being seized
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.
5
Verify test results.
•  If normal, return to diagnostic index to service any additional symptoms.
•  If malfunction remains, inspect related Service information perform repair or diagnosis.
―  If vehicle repaired, troubleshooting completed.
―  If vehicle not repaired or additional diagnostic information not available, replace the PCM.
