Cooling system concerns-Coolant consumption

DESCRIPTION
•  Loss of coolant
•  Water in the air cleaner
POSSIBLE CAUSE
•  Poor sealing at cooling system components
―  Hose(s)/hose joint(s).
―  Coolant expansion tank cap or seal.
―  Coolant expansion tank.
―  Radiator.
―  Water pump.
―  Thermostat housing.
•  Heater core malfunction
•  Damaged gaskets or warped mating faces
•  Cracks or fractures in engine components surrounded by coolant, such as cylinder liners and cylinder head combustion chamber
•  Damaged engine internal part

VISUALLY INSPECT RELATED PART CONDITION
•  Visually inspect the following:
Mechanical:
―  Coolant leak(s)
―  Coolant level
―  Gaskets/seals
―  Hose(s)/hose joints
―  Coolant expansion tank cap and seal
―  Coolant expansion tank
―  Radiator
―  Water pump
―  Thermostat
―  Thermostat housing
―  Visibly damaged or worn parts
―  Loose or missing nuts or bolts
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.
Repeat Step 1.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT COOLANT LEAKAGE AT HEATER UNIT
•  Visually inspect for leakage around heater unit in passenger compartment.
•  Is there any leakage?
Yes
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FOR ENGINE COOLANT LEAKAGE
•  Perform the ENGINE COOLANT LEAKAGE INSPECTION.
•  Is there any leakage detected?
Yes
Repair or replace the applicable part.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT CYLINDER HEAD GASKET
•  Remove the cylinder head.
•  Visually inspect cylinder head gasket and mating surface.
•  Is there any damaged or mating face wrapped?
Yes
Replace the cylinder head gasket, and/or clean the mating surface as necessary.
No
Overhaul the engine and repair or replace as necessary.
(Engine internal part is damaged.)

Verify test results.
•  If normal, return to the diagnostic index to service any additional symptoms.
•  If the malfunction remains, inspect the related Service Information and perform the repair or diagnosis.
―  If the vehicle is repaired, troubleshooting is completed.
―  If the vehicle is not repaired or additional diagnostic information is not available, reprogram the PCM if a later calibration is available. Retest.
