Smoke from water heater unit
DESCRIPTION
•  Smoke or odor is emitted during water heater unit operation.
•  Smoke or odor is emitted right after water heater unit starts operation.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
•  PME fuel was used (not a water heater system malfunction)
•  The water heater system had not been operated for a long period and deteriorated fuel in water heater unit or fuel line was combusted (not a water heater system malfunction)
•  Normal combustion cannot be performed (abnormal combustion)
―  Water heater unit internal malfunction
•  Blower fan malfunction
•  Glow plug malfunction
•  Burner malfunction
―  Temporary poor contact of water heater unit connector
•  Intake system (air intake hose or water heater silencer) malfunction
―  Clogging or deformation

DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS FUEL RELATED
•  Verify what kind of fuel the customer used.
•  Was PME fuel used?
Yes
Explain to the customer that emission of smoke and odor increases if PME is used.
If emission of smoke and odor is higher than other vehicles which use the same fuel, go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.

DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS LONG-TERM NON USE OF WATER HEATER UNIT
•  Perform “FFH Start Heater Utility” a few times using M-MDS.
•  Does emission of smoke and odor decrease?
Yes
Explain to the customer that the symptom was caused because the water heater system had not been operated for a long period and deteriorated fuel in water heater unit or fuel line was combusted.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT WATER HEATER UNIT CONNECTOR CONDITION
•  Inspect the connector condition of the water heater unit.
•  Is the connector connected correctly?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part.

INSPECT WATER HEATER UNIT AIR INTAKE SYSTEM PIPE
•  Inspect the water heater unit air intake system pipe for clogging or deformation.
•  Is any clogging or deformation found?
Yes
Replace the malfunctioning part.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT WATER HEATER UNIT EXHAUST SYSTEM
•  Remove the exhaust pipe of the water heater unit.
•  Inspect the water heater unit exhaust pipe for clogging.
•  Is the pipe clogged?
Yes
Replace the exhaust pipe.
No
Replace the water heater unit.
