WHEEL HUB, STEERING KNUCKLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

Caution
•  Performing the following procedures could cause an open circuit in the front ABS wheel-speed sensor wiring harness if it is pulled by mistake. Before servicing, disconnect the front ABS wheel-speed sensor and set it aside so that the wiring harness will not be pulled by mistake.

1.  Remove the wheel and tire. (See WHEEL AND TIRE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2.  Disconnect the front ABS wheel-speed sensor wiring harness installed to the steering knuckle and set it aside.

3.  Remove the clip from the front shock absorber.

4.  Remove the front brake hose from the front shock absorber.

5.  Remove the locknut with the brake pedal depressed. (See Locknut Installation Note.)

Caution
•  When removing the locknut, remove it manually without using an electric or pneumatic tool. Otherwise, the locknut may seize.
•  When removing the locknut, do not apply load at the ground to the axle. Otherwise, it could damage the wheel hub.

6.  Install a spare nut onto the drive shaft.

7.  Tap the nut with a copper hammer and separate the drive shaft from the axle.

8.  Remove the front brake caliper component installation bolts.

9.  Remove the front brake caliper component and suspend it out of the way using a cable.

10.  Remove the front disc plate.

11.  Remove the front stabilizer control link and dynamic damper from the front shock absorber.

12.  Remove in the order indicated in the table.

13.  Install in the reverse order of removal.

14.  When replacing the steering knuckle, inspect the wheel alignment and adjust it if necessary. (See FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT.)

Wheel Hub Bolt Removal Note

Note
•  Remove the wheel hub bolt only if there is any malfunction.

1.  Remove the wheel hub bolt using a press.

Wheel Hub Bolt Installation Note

1.  Install the new wheel hub bolt using a press.

Wheel Hub Installation Note

1.  Apply grease (D4Y0 33247 or equivalent) to the wheel bearing inner race and drive shaft contact surface (Area A in figure).

2.  Install the wheel hub.


Front Shock Absorber Bolt Installation Note

1.  Install the steering knuckle to the front shock absorber, insert the bolts from the direction indicated as follows, then tighten them to the specified torque.

―  Vehicle left side: Insert the bolts from the vehicle rear.
―  Vehicle right side: Insert the bolts from the vehicle front.


Locknut Installation Note

Caution
•  When installing the locknut, install it manually without using an electric or pneumatic tool. Otherwise, the locknut may seize and the tightening force of the wheel hub may decrease and cause excessive play or abnormal noise.
•  When installing the locknut, do not apply load at the ground to the axle. Otherwise, it could damage the wheel hub.

1.  If dust or grease is on the drive shaft thread area, wipe it off with a cloth.

2.  Tighten the locknut using the following procedure and with the brake pedal depressed.

(1)  Tighten locknut to 100—150 N·m {11—15 kgf·m, 74—110 ft·lbf} torque.
(2)  Loosen locknut to 180°.
(3)  Tighten locknut to 236—274 N·m {25—27 kgf·m, 175—202 ft·lbf} torque.
