AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE REMOVAL[LA4AX-EL (CD4E)]

1.  Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2.  Drain the engine coolant. (See ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT[AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)

3.  Remove the battery and battery tray. (See BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION[AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)

4.  Disconnect the crankcase vent hose and MAF sensor connector.

5.  Remove the air hose and air cleaner cover.

6.  Remove the air cleaner component.

7.  Disconnect the TR switch connector.

8.  Disconnect the HO2S sensor connectors.

9.  Disconnect the transaxle wiring harness connector and remove the wiring harness bracket nut.

10.  Position the wiring harness bracket out of the way and remove the spacer.

11.  Disconnect the wiring harness.

12.  Disconnect the selector cable.

13.  Remove the selector cable and bracket, then position if out of the way.

14.  Disconnect the ground wiring harness.

15.  Remove the thermostat housing. (See THERMOSTAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION[AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)

16.  Disconnect the starter wiring harness connector.

17.  Remove two starter installation bolts, and remove the starter.

18.  Remove the engine cover.

19.  Remove the power steering pressure hose bracket to install the SST (49 UN30 3050).

20.  Remove the connectors from the valve cover.

21.  Remove the vent tube.

22.  Assemble two SSTs using the bolt (M6) and nut, then install them in the position shown in the figure for the cylinder head (RH).

Caution
•  Refer to the SST instruction manual for the basic handing procedure.

23.  Install the SST using the following procedure.

(1)  Install the right rear shaft of the SST to the bolt of the right shock absorber as shown in the figure.

(2)  Install the left rear shaft of the SST to the bolt of the left shock absorber. (Identical position to the right side)
(3)  Install the left/right front shaft of the SST with front foot No.2 to the bolt as shown in the figure.

(4)  Adjust the positions of the SST side bars so that they are the same height (left and right) and horizontal.
(5)  Make sure each joint is securely tightened.

Caution
•  If the SSTs installed to the cylinder head (RH) interfere with the brake pipe, the brake pipe could be damaged. Do not allow the SSTs to interfere with the brake pipe.

•  The SST (49 E017 5A0) can be used in place of the SST (49 C017 5A0).

24.  Support the engine using the SST.

25.  Remove the upper transaxle retaining bolts.

26.  Remove the No.4 engine mount.

27.  Remove the EGR pipe. (See EGR PIPE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION[AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)

28.  Remove the bolts, and remove the No.1 engine mount.

29.  Remove the No.3 engine mount bolt.

30.  Raise the engine 51—76 mm {2.0—3.0 in} using the SSTs.

31.  Lift up the vehicle.

32.  Remove both front wheels. (See WHEEL AND TIRE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

33.  Remove the two splash shields.

34.  If transaxle disassembly is necessary, remove the drain plug and drain the ATF into a suitable container.

35.  Install the drain plug when the ATF has drained.

36.  Remove the generator dynamic damper.

37.  Remove the front drive shaft (RH) and joint shaft component. (See FRONT DRIVE SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.) (See JOINT SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION[AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)

Caution
•  Index-mark the mounting bracket studs and the joint shaft bearing bracket for correct reassembly.

38.  Remove the front drive shaft (LH) component. (See FRONT DRIVE SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

39.  Remove the cross brace.

40.  Remove the exhaust pipe.

(1)  Remove the rubber hanger.
(2)  Remove the nuts and remove the pipe.

41.  Disconnect the front exhaust pipe flange.

42.  Disconnect the rear exhaust pipe flange and remove the exhaust pipe.

43.  Remove the front propeller shaft bolts.

44.  Remove the GND strap bolt.

45.  Remove and discard the propeller shaft center bearing nuts.

46.  Remove the rear propeller shaft bolts and remove the propeller shaft.

47.  Remove the two bolts and remove the transfer vent tube.

48.  Remove the bolts from the bracket.

49.  Remove the two bolts and remove the bracket.

50.  Remove the cross brace.

51.  Lower the vehicle.

52.  Lower the transaxle enough to clear the subframe.

•  It is necessary to lower the transaxle in order to clear the subframe to remove the transaxle.

53.  Lift up the vehicle.

54.  Remove the access cover.

55.  Remove the four torque converter mounting nuts.

56.  Remove the following parts.

(1)  Disconnect the OSS sensor connector.
(2)  Disconnect the TSS sensor connector.
(3)  Remove the bolt.
(4)  Remove the oil pipe and position it aside.

57.  Remove the oil hose.

58.  Install the transaxle jack and secure the transaxle to the jack.

59.  Remove the bolts.

Caution
•  Lower the transaxle so that the torque converter does not fall down.

62.  Lower the transaxle from the engine complete.
