1. Verify that the battery is fully charged. Perform the battery load test. (See BATTERY INSPECTION [L3, AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)
2. Disconnect the ignition coil connector.
3. Connect the remote starter switch between the starter solenoid terminal S and the positive battery cable.
4. Connect the positive lead of the tester to the battery positive cable. Connect the negative lead of the tester to the starter solenoid terminal M.
5. Connect the remote starter switch. Read and note the voltage measurement. Tester voltage will become 0.5 V or less.
6. If the voltage is 0.5 V or less, proceed to the "Starter motor ground circuit test."
7. If the voltage is more than 0.5 V, it indicates that the resistance of the connecting parts, battery positive cable, or starter solenoid is too high. Connect the negative lead of the tester to starter solenoid terminal B and repeat the test. If terminal B voltage is less than 0.5 V, the malfunction exists in either the starter solenoid connecting part or solenoid contact point.
8. Remove the starter solenoid terminal B and terminal S and terminal M cables. Clean the connecting parts and install the cables. Repeat Steps 3-6. If the voltage of terminal M is more than 0.5 V and the voltage of the terminal B is less than 0.5 V, the malfunction exists in the solenoid contact point. Replace the starter motor.
(See STARTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)
9. If the voltage is more than 0.5 V at Step 5, the malfunction exists in the battery positive cable or the connecting part. Clean the battery positive cable connecting part. If it does not correct the malfunction, replace the positive battery cable.
1. Disconnect the ignition coil connector.
2. Connect the remote starter switch between the starter solenoid terminal S and positive battery cable.
3. Connect the positive lead of the tester to the starter motor housing. The connection must be clean and free of rust or grease. Connect the negative lead of the tester to the negative battery terminal.
4. Connect the remote starter switch and read the voltage. If it is normal, the voltage should be 0.2 V or less.
5. If the voltage is more than 0.2 V, clean the negative battery cable connections, the body ground connections, and the starter ground connections. Retest.
6. If the voltage is still is more than 0.2 V after cleaning, replace the cable. If the voltage is less than 0.2 V and the engine cranking speed is still slow, replace the starter motor.
1. Remove the starter motor. (See STARTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)
2. Inspect the starter drive gear (A) and drive plate gear (B) for wear. If the wear pattern is normal, install the starter motor. (See STARTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)
3. If the starter drive gear surface is scratched or damaged, install a new starter motor.
(See STARTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)
