BRAKE DRUM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

Removal

Caution
• Be careful not to inhale brake dust.

1. Remove the wheels and tires. (See WHEEL AND TIRE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2. Remove the screws.

3. Remove the brake drum.

Caution
• Use of a brake drum puller or a torch is not recommended. Brake drum distortion can result.
Note
• If the brake drum is rusted to the center of the wheel hub, tap the center of the brake drum between the hub bolt.

4. Inspect the inner diameter of the brake drum.

(1) If the inner diameter of the brake drum exceeds the maximum specification, replace the brake drum.
Maximum:
230.1 mm {9.059 in}

Installation

1. Install the brake drum on the vehicle.

Note
• Adjust rear brake as necessary. (See BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT.)

2. Install the screws.

3. Clean the wheel hub mounting surface and wheel pilot.

Warning
• Whenever a wheel is installed, always remove any corrosion, dirt or foreign material present on the mounting surfaces of the wheel or the surface of the wheel hub, brake drum that contacts the wheel. Installing wheels without correct metal-to-metal contact at the wheel mounting surfaces can cause the wheel nuts to loosen and the wheel to come off while the vehicle is in motion, causing loss of control. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

4. Install the wheels and tires. (See WHEEL AND TIRE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
