DTC B1601

id0902a6808000

Detection Condition

• The PCM has detected unprogrammed key ID number.

Note
• Every time the DTC B1601 is read, the PCM disables the engine operation for 20 s. To start the engine using the programmed ignition key, turn the ignition switch to the ON position, and then hold for 20 s or more.

Possible Cause

• No keys have been programmed after replacing the PCM.

• Unprogrammed key used

• Attempt made to program a ninth key

• PCM malfunction

Note
• Large metallic objects, electronic devices on the key chain, or a second key on the same key ring as the immobilizer system ignition key may cause vehicle starting concerns and record DTCs under certain conditions. If a fault cannot be identified, examine the customer's key ring for such objects or devices. If present, inform the customer that they need to keep these objects from touching the immobilizer system ignition key while starting the engine. These objects and devices cannot damage the immobilizer system ignition key, but can cause a momentary problem if they are too close to the key during engine start. If a problem occurs, turn the ignition switch off and restart the engine with all other objects on the key ring held away from the ignition key. Verify that the encoded ignition key used by the customer is an encoded ignition key.

Diagnostic Procedure

STEP

INSPECTION

ACTION

1
VERIFY NUMBER OF PROGRAMMED KEYS
• Using the WDS or equivalent, perform the PID/data monitor inspection and verify the number of programmed keys.
• Are one or more keys programmed?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
• Using the WDS or equivalent, clear the key ID number and program a new key if necessary.
• Go to the next step.
2
VERIFY NUMBER OF PROGRAMMED KEYS
• Using the WDS or equivalent, perform the PID/data monitor inspection and verify the number of programmed keys.
• Are eight keys programmed?
Yes
Using the WDS or equivalent, clear the key ID numbers if necessary, then go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.
3
• Using the WDS or equivalent, perform the PID inspection and verify SPAREKEY.
• Is ENABLE displayed?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Select ENABLE using the WDS or equivalent, then go to the next step.
4
Prepare two programmed keys.
• Using the first key, turn the ignition switch to the ON position for 3 s.
• Using the second key, turn the ignition switch to the ON position for 3 s.
• Attempt to start the engine with the second key.
• Does the engine start?
Yes
The system is normal.
No
Go to the next step.
5
Inspect the PCM.
• Using the WDS or equivalent, program the key ID number.
• Using the programmed key, turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
• Using the WDS or equivalent, verify if any DTCs are displayed.
- Is DTC B1601 displayed again?
Yes
Replace the PCM and perform the resetting procedure for the immobilizer system when replacing the PCM.
No
DTC inspection completed.
