Diagnostic Procedure

STEP

INSPECTION

ACTION

1
INSPECT REAR WINDOW DEFROSTER RELAY
Disconnect the rear window defroster relay connector.
Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
Inspect the rear window defroster relay. (See RELAY INSPECTION.)
Is the rear window defroster relay normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the rear window defroster relay.
2
INSPECT RELATED WIRING HARNESS FOR OPEN CIRCUIT
Disconnect the rear window defroster switch connector.
Measure the resistance between rear window defroster switch terminal B and rear window defroster relay terminal E.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair the related wiring harness.
3
INSPECT RELATED WIRING HARNESS FOR SHORT TO GROUND
Measure the resistance between rear window defroster relay terminal E and ground.
Is the resistance more than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair the related wiring harness and the BJB.
4
INSPECT REAR WINDOW DEFROSTER RELAY GROUND
Measure the resistance between rear window defroster relay terminal A and ground.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair the related wiring harness and the BJB.
5
INSPECT REAR WINDOW DEFROSTER RELAY VOLTAGE
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Measure the voltage at rear window defroster relay terminal D.
Is the voltage more than 10 V?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair the malfunctioning BJB.
6
INSPECT POWER SUPPLY TO RELATED WIRING HARNESS
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Measure the voltage at rear window defroster switch terminal D.
Is the voltage more than 10 V?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair the related wiring harness.
7
INSPECT REAR WINDOW DEFROSTER SWITCH OPERATION
While switching over the rear window defroster switch, measure the resistance between rear window defroster switch terminals B and D.
Is the resistance 10,000 ohms or more in the OFF position?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the rear window defroster switch. (See REAR WINDOW DEFROSTER SWITCH REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
8
INSPECT REAR WINDOW DEFROSTER RELAY SWITCH VOLTAGE
Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
Disconnect the filament connector.
Connect the rear window defroster relay connector.
Connect the rear window defroster switch connector.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Measure the voltage at filament terminal 1A.
Is the voltage more than 10 V?
Yes
Go to Step 11.
No
Go to the next step.
9
INSPECT RELATED WIRING HARNESS FOR OPEN CIRCUIT
Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
Disconnect the rear window defroster relay connector.
Measure the resistance between rear window defroster relay terminal B and filament terminal A.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair the related wiring harness and the BJB.
10
INSPECT RELATED WIRING HARNESS FOR SHORT TO GROUND
Measure the resistance between filament terminal A and ground.
Is the resistance more than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair the related wiring harness.
11
INSPECT FILAMENT GROUND
Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
Measure the resistance between filament terminal B and ground.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair the related wiring harness.
12
INSPECT FILAMENT
Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
Connect the filament connector.
Connect the rear window defroster relay connector.
Connect the rear window defroster switch connector.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Turn the rear window defroster switch to the ON position.
Note
• The specified filament voltage is 6-7 V. A voltage greater than the specification indicates an open circuit between the center of the filament and ground. A voltage below the specification indicates an open circuit between the center of the filament and B+.
Measure the voltage between the center of each filament and ground.
Is the voltage more than 7 V?
Yes
Repair the filament between the center section and ground.
No
Repair the filament between the center section and B+.
