Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Function

The driver airbag detonator (R12/3) located in the airbag module inflator is ignited by means of an electrical pulse generated by the restraint systems control module (N2/7) (from 12/99) or the airbag and ETR control module (N2/2) (to 11/99).

Operation
1 When the triggering threshold for the driver airbag is exceeded, the restraint systems control module (N2/7) delivers an electrical light on pulse to the detonator in the inflator.
2 The detonator then ignites the solid propellant in the inflator. When the solid propellant burns it generates a gas that flows explosively under high pressure through a filter and into the bag folded compactly on top of the inflator.
3 The bag then inflates, forcing open the steering wheel hub cover along a special split line.
4 As more gas enters the bag, it pushes through the opening and fills to maximum volume.
5 The bag reaches its full volume within approximately 45 msec.
6 It begins to deflate immediately after attaining maximum volume. The gas escapes from the airbag through a filter and the airbag collapses.
