ABS Speed Sensor, Brake Squeal and Parts Information

D. ABS Speed Sensor for Rear Axle (Non-USA version)

Prior to lowering or removing the rear axle center section, the speed sensor must be removed or the cable disconnected from the connector in the rear and pulled out from below, otherwise the cable of the speed sensor may be damaged.

E. Brake Squeal

Damping plates (previously anti-squeal plates) are now available as a remedy for brake squeal on vehicles with fixed calipers. These damping plates have an adhesive coating (covered with paper for shipping protection) on the side.

The damping plates are available under the part numbers of the previous anti-squeal plates.

Repair Notes

The damping plates must always be installed on both wheel brakes of one axle.

To best determine which brakes are squealing, drive the vehicle at a walking pace and have someone outside walking near the wheel wells while the brakes are applied.

Damping plates cannot be installed with new brake pads. At least 1 mm wear per brake pad is required to provide the necessary space for the damping plate installation.
To install, remove protective paper from the adhesive coating and press the damping plate firmly on the brake pad backing plate. The surface of the backing plate must be clean and free of grease.

NOTE: For models 107, 123, 126 and 201, brake pads with an additional coating on the backing plate are available for the front and rear wheel brakes. Damping plates for these brake pads are not necessary. Brake squeal can only occur if the coating is worn through. In this case, the installation of new brake pads is recommended.
