Axle - (Front) New Wishbone Bushings Dampen Vibrations

REF.No.: 33/19, 40/75

To: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

DATE: June 1987

SUBJECT:
MODIFIED FRONT AXLE WISHBONE BUSHINGS
MODEL 124

As of January 1987 (production phase-in) modified wishbone bushings are installed on the front axle. The wishbone has two-piece bushings made of high-dampening rubber at its front and rear mounts (Figure 2). Vehicle and steering wheel vibrations are thereby dampened.

Note:
Due to the two-piece wishbone bushings, repair kit 124 330 05 75 replaces repair kit 124 330 03 75.

Procedure

1. Clamp wishbone in a vise with aluminum jaws.

2. Mill down the flange of the clamping sleeve on the front wishbone mount with a 90° X 25 mm diameter counter-sink and knock out the sleeve (see Service Microfiche Front Axle, Models 124, 201, Job no. 33-526).

3. Knock rubber bushing out of wishbone at collar with a suitable drift.

4. Pull out the rubber bushing of the rear wishbone mount using special tool 124 589 00 43 00 (Figure 4).

5. Install the two-piece torsion rubber bushing, part no. 124 333 43 14 (shore hardness 45°), on the front mount. Make sure that both flat surfaces are vertically (not horizontally) aligned (i.e. perpendicular to the road).

6. Install the two-piece torsion rubber bushings part no. 124 333 42 14 (shore hardness 4O°), on the rear mount. Make sure that both flat surfaces are horizontally aligned (i.e. parallel to road).

7. To install the rubber bushings, use special tool 201 589 06 33 00.

8. Press the rubber bushings into the wishbone, one by one, using the vise with thrust piece 012b.

9. Flare out the clamping sleeve. Position thrust piece 012b on the flared end and thrust piece 012a on the straight (unflanged) end of the clamping sleeve. Clamp both pieces in a vise and press together until thrust piece 12a bottoms out (Figure 8).
