No Upshift, RPM Cut-Out, Hangs In Gear, Double-Shifts

CAUSE:
1. Transmission range "B" engagement switch (S16/8) in shifter housing periodically becomes stuck or energized (due to loose attachment).
2. Vacuum line for Bowden cable delayed upshift vacuum element poorly routed or kicked.
3. Vacuum applied to Bowden cable delayed upshift vacuum element after warm-up time period.

TEST:
1. To determine if transmission range "B" engagement switch (S16/8) is a possibility, Kickdown solenoid valve (Y3) on automatic transmission. Road test vehicle to test shift points. If shifting is now normal, proceed with remedy 1 listed below.
2. Road test vehicle with simulated cold delayed upshift points. For this purpose, connect incoming and outgoing vacuum lines at Upshift delay switchover valve (Y3/3).
3. Then additionally road test with vacuum lines disconnected from Upshift delay switchover valve (Y3/3).

REMEDY:
1. Replace Transmission range "B" engagement switch, part no. 140 545 02 14, and verify normal kickdown circuit function (including "B" switch). Refer to NOTE listed below.
2. Ensure proper, kink-free routing of vacuum lines.
3. Verify proper vacuum line connection, correct electrical activation signal, and correct function of Upshift delay switchover valve (Y3/3).

NOTE:
- Readout malfunction memories of Ignition control module (N1/3) and LH-SFI control module (N3/1) for diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's) resulting from the above described conditions.
- False or misleading diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's) can result from malfunctions of "B" switch (S16/8).

NOTE:
- As of 4/92 production, a modified Transmission range "B engagement switch (S16/8) with additional mounting clip is installed (shaded, area. Figure 1).
- The additional clip snaps into a retaining groove added to the shift selector housing.
- If the modified switch is used in an early production shift selector housing (without retaining groove), the additional clip must filed off of the new switch housing.
