Performing Adaption Process to Optimize Function

Adaption Torque Requirements During Shifting - 722.6:





Control module N1513 of transmission series 722.6 has the has the capability to adapt to variations in shift member clearances, filling pressures and friction characteristics to maintain optimal function.

Examples of when transmission adaption process should be performed:
1. After replacement of complete automatic transmission.
2. After installation of replacement electronic control module N15/3.
3. If shift characteristics seem unfavorable and an effort is being made to optimize shift quality:

General Information Concerning 722.6 Adaption Process
1. Each shift and each shift member has control module adaption requirements (except Reverse B3).
2. Adaption values are established during shifting with extremely light loads. The transmission then functions correctly in all other driving situations.
3. Approx. eight shifts per shift member must take place within the permissible engine torque engine speed and transmission oil temperature allowances to effectively improve adaption values.

- Upshifting using shift selector lever is an effective method to achieve upshifts with such light engine torque.
- Do not use (or move) selector lever for: Downshift, Idle Throttle (re: B2, K1 listed blow).

4. Engine must continue to run (or ten minutes after adapting procedure to allow control module to record and store new adaption values into memory (vehicle can be either driven or at idle).

If engine is turned off prior to the required ten minute time interval, all new adaption values will be lost and control module will default to previous values.



Requirements:
1. Road should be as level as possible without heavy traffic. Tip: Avoid uphill or downhill grades (downhill grades of 1% or less are OK).
2. Transmission oil temperature must be between 60°-105°C. Tip: Transmission oil temperature between 80°- 90°c. Observe transmission oil temperature with HHT, engine idling. transmission engaged in Drive or Reverse.
3. Air conditioning compressor must be OFF.
4. Vehicle must be driven with very light throttle loads. Tip: Do not exceed 10 - l5% accelerator pedal position. You cannot perform adaption with heavy throttle loads or high engine torque.
5. Do not exceed 1800 rpm during shift process. Tip: Ideal rpm during shift moment is approx. 1200 - 1600 rpm.

Description of Adaption Driving Technique:
1. Connect HHT and drive cable. Tip: recommended HHT screen selection,

Model 129 or 140, Gasoline engine, selection ETC,

2. Have a second person observe HHT while driving to indicate when engine is in permissible torque range. Tip: Refer to adaption Torque Requirement chart on previous page. Not that 4.2 liter engine has different permissible torque values then 5.0 or 6.0 liter engines.
3. Driving slowly, place shift selector in position 1.
4. Lightly accelerate vehicle and then gently reduce throttle position to bring engine torque to permissible value. Tip: HHT display is not instantaneous. Allow torque value to stabilize.
5. When engine torque is within correct range, move shift selector to position 2.
6. Reduce speed and bring shift selector back to position 1. Tip: You must repeatedly perform this low speed up and down shifting technique.
7. Repeat steps 5 through 7 up to ten times if necessary.
8. Repeat steps 5 through 7 with shift selector in position 2, upshifting to position 3 up to times if necessary.
9. continue with this same procedure for the 3 - 4 upshift and the 4- 5 upshift accordingly.

Notes on Hand Held Tester (HHT) Adaption Value Display:
1. The numbers shown in the HHT adaption value displays are correction factors used by the control unit in shift process calculations.
2. There are no ideal numbers to achieve. However, this display does give the opportunity to visually determine if adaption has taken place.
3. Important Point: the number zero (0) in the adaption value display may be an indication of one of two things:

- The shift member function is so optimal that it requires no adaption.
- Adaption is not yet complete for that shift member.

4. Resetting adaption values to zero: Working: Resetting values to zero may be a major setback from achieving optimal shift quality.
