Transmission Oil Is Very Dark or Black, Does Not Smell Burnt
Transmission Oil is Very Dark or Black, But Does Not Smell Burnt
Cause/remedy:
If during oil level checks or an oil change at 30,000 or 60,000 km the transmission oil is found to be very dark but does not smell burnt, proceed as follows:
1. Remove oil specimen (approx. 30 ml) and pour into a clean glass container. If, shortly after shaking the container, dark clouds (metal abrasion) can be detected on the insides of the container, then carry out the following remedy:
2. Remove oil pan and oil filter.
3. Check whether there are significant deposits with aluminum abrasion in the oil pan and or on the upper side of the oil filter housing which has been unscrewed.
4. If deposits of dirt or aluminum abrasion are found, remove the transmission.
5. Flush out transmission oil cooler and supply lines. Unscrew both oil pipes at the joint between the hose and the pipe at the engine end and flush out using at least 2 liters of flushing liquid.
