SUBJECT: BODY REPAIRS MODEL 201

The installation of the extended-reach windshield wiper (refer to S-I. 82/38, March 1985) required redesign of several body components. During front end repairs, the following modifications should be considered:

1. Hood

Near the windshield wiper system, the hood is shorter and has a higher arch. There are two windshield washer nozzles.

Partitions in the Engine Compartment:

2. Partitions in the engine compartment

The larger gap between the hood and the rubber seal is compensated for by higher partitions (arrows, Figure 1)..

Windshield Lower Cross Member:

3. Windshield lower cross member

To accommodate the wiper system and the modified windshield, the cross member has been reshaped across the entire installed width. The locating shoulders of the weld flanges (arrows) for welding the cross member to the front wall pillars are also different (Figure 2).

Firewall:

4. Firewall

The center section of the firewall was modified to accommodate tile cross member below the windshield (Figure 3).

Front Wall Pillars:

5. Front wall pillars

The shoulders of the welding flanges (arrows) on the inner and outer shells of the front wall pillars were adapted to the modified windshield lower cross member (Figure 4).
Replacement parts

After previous-version parts are used up, only modified front body sections (with or without firewall), partitions in engine compartment, and front wall pillars will be available.

The hood, windshield lower cross member, and firewall center will continue to be available in both the previous and modified versions.

Repair instructions

If, in the case of body repairs, previous parts must be replaced with modified parts, the following must be observed on vehicles without the extended-reach wiper:

1. If the modified front body section with firewall is welded into the vehicle (job no. 62-100), the shoulders in the welding flanges of the front wall pillars must be adapted to the windshield lower cross member (dashed line, Figure 5). During this repair, only install the modified hood (two washer nozzles, arrows, Figure 6).

1 - Modified Left Partition 2 - Modified Right Partition:

Figure 8 - Previous-Version Hood:

2. If the modified body section without firewall is welded into the vehicle (job no. 62- 110/112), the partitions in the engine compartment must be cut along the dashed line shown in Figure 7. During this repair, only install the previous-version hood (single washer nozzle, arrow, Figure 8).
3. If a left or right front wheelhousing assembly is replaced (job no. 62-120), the modified partitions must be cut along the dashed line shown in Figure 7. During this repair, only install the previous-version hood (Figure 8).

Figure 9 - Modified Center Partition:

4. For the repairs described under items 2 and 3, the modified center partition must be cut along the dashed line prior to installation (Figure 9).

1 - Previous Windshield Lower Cross Member 2 - Modification to Previous Cross Member:

5. If the previous front wall pillar is replaced with the modified-version, the windshield lower cross member must be modified. The shoulders of the welding flanges (where the front wall pillars are connected) should be modified as shown in Figure 10.
