5TH Gear Shift Conditions
GeneralIn position "D" a current is switched to the automatic transmission control unit and the transmission is able to shift up into 5th gear.
Contact Switch:
As a result of a cross-movement with the selector lever in position "4", the D contact switch (S16/9) is operated and the current flow is interrupted, the transmission shifts only up to 4th gear. The switch control for the D contact is integrated in the shift gate. The D contact switch (S16/9) is located in the housing of the floor, mounted shift.
4-5 Upshift
The upshift into 5th gear is dependent on the following conditions and parameters:
- selector lever in position "D"
- intake manifold pressure (engine load state)
- vehicle speed (output rpm).
An appropriate vehicle speed must be exceeded dependent on intake manifold pressure so that 5th gear can be engaged.
5-4 Downshift
A distinction is made between a selector lever downshift and an automatic downshift. The 5-4 downshifts are dependent on the following conditions:
Selector lever downshift:
- selector lever moved from "D" to "4'.
- vehicle speed (output rpm).
The selector lever downshift, can be performed as a braking shift (idle throttle) or as an accelerating shift (under load) by moving the selector lever from "D" to "4", unless vehicle speed is so high that the engine would be governed.
Automatic (accelerator) downshift:
- mode selector switch
- vehicle speed (output rpm)
- accelerator pedal position
- kickdown switch
An appropriate accelerator position must be exceeded depending on vehicle speed and the mode selected, or the kickdown switch must be operated so that the transmission can shift into 4th gear.
