Transmission Noise When Coating or When Driving In Reverse

NOTE: Unusual transmission noise on vehicles produced within the production period listed below. may be attributable to the thrust bearing of clutch
K1. The first signs of wear on the thrust bearing are grinding noises which are audible when coasting or when driving in reverse.








REMEDY:
1. Remove transmission oil pan. The transmission must be replaced if steel shavings are found in the oil pan.
2. It shavings are not found in oil pan, remove valve body and large intermediate plate. The transmission must be replaced if steel shavings are found on the intermediate plate. Thoroughly clean the torque converter and transmission oil cooler with lines.
3. It steel shavings are not found, perform the following:

3.1 Remove transmission.
3.2 Remove front cover and replace thrust washer (96,) and compensating shim (95).
3.3 Measure axial play (B) of clutch K1 and correct (Job 27640, step 83).
3.4 Thoroughly clean the torque converter and transmission oil cooler with lines.

NOTE: If steel shavings are found in cleaning fluid (kerosene) during cleaning of torque converter, replace torque converter.
