Removal:





1. Turn ignition key to position "0". Disconnect battery negative terminal and cover.
2. Remove floor mat in passenger footwell.
3. Unscrew bolts on foot rest.
4. Disconnect red 10-pin plug connection (X29/9).





5. Pull off control knobs for blower and air distribution switch.





6. Unscrew nuts on control unit (width across flats 24 mm).





7. Remove ash tray. Unscrew bolts on ash tray housing and remove housing.
8. Press out cover on control unit and remove downwards while pulling off electrical connections on the back.





9. Loosen bolts on retaining plate for control units.





10. Press air distribution switch (right) toward the right and blower switch (left) upwards out of retaining plate.





11. Pull retaining plate slightly backwards and unclip temperature selector wheels.
12. Remove retaining plate.





13. Pull off electrical connections and vacuum lines on blower switch and remove switch.
14. Remove radio.
15. Unscrew bolts on right-hand tunnel covering.
16. Remove covering below glove compartment.
17. Unscrew bolts (3) on panel in passenger footwell, remove panel from studs and press toward the right so that the lateral covering of the center console can be slightly pulled off.
18. Open cable straps for attaching line.





19. Unscrew mounting bolts of control unit with special tool.
20. Remove triggering unit through opening above ash tray, while pulling cable along.

Installation:
21. Screw on control unit (tightening torque 10 Nm).

NOTE: The arrow on the control unit must point in the direction of travel.





22. Connect red 10-pin plug connection (X29/9) with cable harness.
23. Connect battery, turn ignition key to position "1", and test system by means of the RS warning lamp.
24. Turn ignition key to position "0". Disconnect battery negative terminal and cover.
25. Disconnect red 10-pin plug connection (X29/9).

26. Connect electrical connections and vacuum lines to blower switch.
27. Route connection cable and fasten with cable straps.





28. Insert air distribution switch (right) to the left and blower switch (left) downwards into retaining plate.





29. Insert retaining plate at the mounting bolts and align so that the distance between the outer edge of the opening in the center console and the outer edge on the bores for tne control switches is 15 mm.

NOTE: The cover can be used as an auxiliary dimension line.





30. Screw mounting bolts on retaining plate.
31. Test system with tester. [1][2]Component Tests and General Diagnostics
32. Continue installation in the reverse sequence.
33. Check system with RS warning lamp.





34. Tie string to red 10-pin plug of control unit and route connecting cable through the front wall pillar with the aid of this string.

NOTE: On vehicles up to 9/87, test steps 2, 6 and 7 found under "Test Instructions for Tester..." are no longer required with the installation of air bag 1/3.

36. Continue installation in the reverse sequence.
37. Check system with the aid of the RS warning lamp.
- Connect test coupling/plug connection, airbag, 10-pin (X29/9).
- Switch on ignition. The RS or SRS warning lamp must go out after approx. 4 s.
