Stalling and/or Cutting Out Complaints

07.3-88043 1. Engine Stalls Suddenly and Restarts after All CIS-E Engines Revised 7/89 4/88
Brief Period

2. Engine Cuts-Out During Coasting Engine 102, 103

1. Engine Stalls Suddenly and Restarts after Brief Period

As the cause for this complaint is difficult to determine, the following checks must be performed:

- Check connections to coil.

- Check TD signal wire for intermittent ground contact ie. at diagnostic socket, at tachometer, at connector for fuel pump/A/C compressor cut-out relay.

- Using a gauge, check the sockets of the plug connections for the fuel pump relay and overload protection. Bend widened sockets back together. Check plug connection for fuel pump/A/C compressor cut-out relay for moisture and corrosion. Clean plug connection and replace relay if necessary.

- Check for open circuit at position sensor by moving wire at sensor and at plug connection.

- On engine 103, check distributor rotor and cap. Remove rotor and check back for damage.

- If vehicle with deceleration shut-off stalls after coasting, check electrohydraulic actuator and replace if necessary.

- In models 124, 201, install modified component compartment cover (see Service Information 54/48, 62/18, March 1988).

2. Engine Cuts-Out During Coasting

Note:
This Cause Remedy only applies to vehicles with CIS-E control unit with the following part numbers 006 545 02 32, 006 545 14 32, 006 545 77 32, 006 545 79 32, 007 545 14 32 and 007 545 15 32.

Cause:
No speed signal from speedometer to CIS-E control unit.

Remedy:
Connect multimeter to CIS-E control unit plug, socket 6 and ground.

Model 124, 201

Push vehicle forward and backward.

Nominal value. 0-9 V

Repeat above test and check Voltage direct at Hall-effect speed sensor. Check wire from Hall-effect speed sensor to connector X26, socket 11, check plug connection X53/5 for intermittent contact.

Model 107, 126

Drive vehicle on dynamometer or road.

Nominal value at 25 mph (40 km/h): above 1 Volt

Check wire from electronic speedometer to connector X26, socket 6.

On vehicles with deceleration shut-off signal, check electro-hydraulic correction element and replace if necessary.
