SUBJECT:
DIAGNOSTIC FAULT CODES INCLUDED WITHIN DAMAGE CODES
A) GENERAL INFORMATION
8) EXPLANATION OF ILLUSTRATIONS
C) EXPLANATION OF FAULT CODES
D) GUIDELINES FOR SELECTING A FAULT CODE

Fault codes from vehicle on-board diagnostic systems are to be included in warranty claim damage codes beginning with the release of the new Damage Code Microfiche edition #Z7 6001-8006 O9 13 dated 09/91.

A) General Information

Damage codes containing fault codes are new and are presently covered in eight diagnostic system topics throughout the microfiche set. The title of the topic will include the wording "Impulse Readout", indicating that fault codes are listed in the topic and should be included in the damage code. if applicable. Only the two-digit fault codes listed in these topics are to be used in a damage code. Additionally, single digit fault codes must always be entered as a two digit code (example: fault code "3" would be listed as "03", etc.).

Fault codes are listed in the ^.Location Quantity" column of the Damage Code microfiche. The fault code is to be entered in digits 9 and 10 of the complete damage code as shown below (ie: in place of the location/quantity code).

B) Explanation of Illustrations

In the example (Figure 1), an EZL/AKR control unit is shown in the center surrounded by the components interconnected to it. Whenever it is possible for fault codes to be part of a damage code, the illustration provided will be similar to the example in Figure 1, ie: an electronic control unit (ECU) surrounded by the components interconnected to it.

C) Explanation of Fault Codes

The 5-digit code numbers shown for each component are the first 5 digits of the damage code (component identification). The code numbers shown inside the box (next to the ECU) are fault codes that would indicate faults of the ECU itself. The code numbers shown in the reference lines from the ECU to the external components are the fault codes that would indicate faults in the various components illustrated.

For connection and operation of the impulse display counter, and also for charts that define what each fault code represents, refer to the Diagnostic Manual that contains testing of the electronic system involved.

D) Guidelines for Selecting a Fault Code

The fault code should be included in a damage code only if it has correctly indicated a defective component or condition pertaining to the warranty repair (determined through diagnostic testing and vehicle performance after component replacement, repair, or adjustment ). If more than one fault code was indicated and found to he correct, it will be necessary to select the one fault code that most closely reflects the actual cause of the problem. The fault code is then included in the damage code as explained in "General Information".

Examples:

1) While testing the ignition system due to an engine performance complaint, the on-board diagnostics of the EZL/AKR ignition control unit indicate a fault code "6" (camshaft position sensor). Using the Diagnostic Manual, detailed testing of the camshaft position sensor indicates an electrical fault and replacement of the sensor corrects the engine performance problem.
The damage code for this repair would be 05048 73 7 06.
Note;
The fault code (06) had been correctly indicated by the ECU's diagnostics, and a component was replaced.

2) While testing another vehicle with an engine performance complaint, the on-board diagnostics of the ignition system were checked The impulse readout of the EZL/AKR ignition system indicated fault code "4" (load sensor in the EZL/AKR ignition control unit (N1/3) defective). Detailed inspection during diagnosis determined a disconnected vacuum-line elbow at the intake manifold. Reconnection of the elbow onto the vacuum fitting corrected the engine performance problem.
The damage code for this repair would be 54414 86 8 04.
Note:
the fault code (04) had been correctly indicated by the ECU's diagnostics, and a component was repaired.
