Hood Hinge - Inspection Procedure

REF. NO. 88/32

TO: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

DATE: May 1990

SUBJECT:
INSPECTION OF ENGINE HOOD HINGES
ALL MODELS

If the engine hood hinge is suspected of being damaged (e.g. in an accident), a simple inspection can be performed to determine whether or not the hood hinges must be replaced.

By performing this inspection, a possibly unnecessary and time consuming
replacement of the hood hinges can be avoided (Figure 1)

Inspection Procedure

Unlock and open the engine hood (45° position).

Place a steel ruler (approx. 150 mm long) against the outer edge of the front engine hood hinge lever (Figure 1).

The hinge is OK if the gap (arrows) between the steel ruler and the hinge lever is 0-0.2 mm (Figure 2).

If the gap is greater than 0.2 mm, then the engine hood hinge must be replaced (see Service Microfiche system, Repair Instructions, Job No. 88-306).
