Ignition Switch: Service and Repair
Steering Lock Versions:
NOTE: THREE types of steering lock assemblies were used on this vehicle. VERSION 1 uses a plug-type chrome cap. VERSION 2 uses a plug-type plastic cap. VERSION 3 uses a screw-on cap. Component replacement for all three types is the same except where indicated in the text.
The steering lock assembly is comprised of three main components:
1. Ignition lock (locking cylinder)
2. Ignition switch (starter switch)
3. Steering column lock (steering lock)
Use this procedure to replace the IGNITION SWITCH. Additional information is also available for IGNITION LOCK replacement and STEERING COLUMN LOCK replacement.
REMOVAL
Starter Switch And Connector:
1. Disconnect battery.
2. Remove steering wheel.
3. Remove instrument cluster by pulling out as far as possible. Remove tachometer cable, electrical connectors, and oil pressure line.
4. Turn ignition switch to position 1. Disconnect starter switch connector.
Starter Switch Alignment:
5. Use a short screwdriver to remove three starter switch screws.
6. Remove starter switch.
INSTALLATION
Starter Switch Alignment:
1. Align starter switch lug with lock housing recess.
2. Install and tighten starter switch screws.
3. Reconnect starter switch connector.
4. Install instrument panel and reconnect gauges and wiring.
5. Install steering wheel.
6. Reconnect battery.
