Ring Gear/Flexplate - Installation

REF. NO. 03/41, 15/35

To: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

DATE: January 1987

SUBJECT:
INSTALLATION OF RING GEAR AND FLEXPLATES IN
ENGINES 11/6/117 WITH ELECTRONIC IGNITION SYSTEM (EZL)
MODELS 107.048, 126.035/039/045 AS OF SEPTEMBER 1985

The ring gear (20) with segments (25) and the flexplates (18) are provided with locating bores indicating whether these parts are correctly positioned relative to one another (arrows).

When installing the ring gear and flexplates, care should be taken that the locating bores are aligned with one another. If, for example, the locating bores are offset by 120° then the segments (25) on the ring gear (20) will also be offset by 120° with reference to the crankshaft. This will cause the crankshaft position sensor (3) to generate its signal at the wrong time and the electronic ignition control unit to compute the ignition timing incorrectly.

A dowel pin (24) is used to align the flexplates with the crankshaft.
