Check timing of engine
Shown On Engine 112:
For Engine 112 Only, Check Basic Position Of Balance Shaft:
1 Remove cylinder head covers
- Air cleaner mounted on vehicle.
- Air cleaner positioned at engine side.
2 Unscrew combination valve (right)
NOTE:
- Only on engines fitted with air pump.
- Installation: Replace combination valve gasket.
Inspecting
3 Check timing
- Intake
- Exhaust
NOTE: See Camshaft code number and assignment.
4 Position engine to 40 degrees after ignition TDC of cylinder 1
NOTE: Rotate engine at crankshaft in direction of rotation until 40 degrees marking on belt pulley/vibration damper is aligned with marking on timing case cover. Slots at camshafts must be pointing in direction of inner V.
CAUTION: The engine must not be turned back, otherwise the timing chain can get jammed.
5 Inspect basic position of camshafts
NOTE: Place locating plate for right camshaft (2) flush onto right cylinder head and insert into the slot in camshaft (6). Proceed the same way with the left camshaft in the left cylinder head.
- If the two locating plates cannot be inserted into slots, Set the basic position of camshafts.
6 Inspect basic position of the balance shaft
- Only for engine 112
NOTE: The scribe marks of the pin at front crankcase (A) and notch in correctional weight (B) at front side of correctional weight are in alignment. The two scribe marks can be seen through the left timing case duct at a depth of about 22 cm from the cylinder head cover separating surface.
7 Install in the reverse order.
