Center Assembly

Center Assembly






NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.

REMOVAL
1. Drain rear axle oil
2. Remove left frame cross braces (36), refer to Body and Frame.
3. Remove complete exhaust system (105), refer to Exhaust System/
4. Remove exhaust heat shield (105c)
5. Remove tunnel closing plate (108)
7. Remove propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a), refer to Drive/Propeller Shaft
8. Remove propeller shaft (106) at rear axle center assembly
9. Remove cable guide rail (X62/8a)
- Do not tension cables

WARNING: Risk of accident when lifting a rear axle half

10. Remove rear axle shafts (37) at connecting flange, refer to Axle Shaft Assembly, Constant Velocity Type
- Discard retaining bolts

NOTE: Vehicle must not lift off the platform surface

11. Move rear axle shaft into approximately the horizontal position and push together
- Fasten rear axle shaft securely on rear axle carrier
12. Using assembly attachment tool No. 140 589 01 62 00, or equivalent, support rear axle center assembly (50)
13. Remove bolts (50a)
- Discard self locking nuts
14. Remove front center assembly mounting
15. Remove rear axle center assembly (50)

INSTALLATION
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
- Replace self-locking internal polygon or hexagon socket bolts and washers for axle shafts
- Lightly oil axle shaft bolts on thread and bolt head
- Replace self locking nuts
- Replace breather
- Fill differential with suitable differential fluid:
Models with 6 cylinder engines: 1.3 liters
Models with 8 and 12 cylinder engines: 1.4 liters
- Tighten the following components as noted:
- Breather: 30 Nm
- Propeller Shaft:
- Intermediate bearing to frame floor:
Bolt with washer: 25 Nm
Bolt with collar and centering tip: 30 Nm
- Self locking nuts and bolts:
- Flexible disk to propeller shaft and/or axle flange
10 mm nut: 40 Nm
12 mm nut: 60 Nm
- Front rear axle center assembly to rear axle carrier: 45 Nm
- Rear axle shaft to Flange:
10 mm bolt: 70 Nm
12 mm bolt: 100 Nm
- Rear cross brace to frame floor: 120 Nm
- Rear rear axle center assembly to rear axle carrier: 95 Nm
- Tunnel closing plate to frame floor: 25 Nm
