Function of Automatic Transmission

The automatic transmission 722.6xx is an electronically controlled 5 speed transmission with a lock-up clutch in the torque converter. The ratios for the gear stages are produced by three planetary gear sets. The high-ratio 5th gear is designed as an overdrive. The shift processes are introduced electronically, the gears being shifted by 8 suitable combination of three hydraulically-operated multiple-disc brakes, three hydraulically-operated multiple-disc clutches and two mechanical freewheels.

The automatic transmission with electronic control basically offers the following advantages:
- Reduced fuel consumption
- Improved shift quality
- Favorably spaced ratios thanks to 5 gears
- Increased service-life and reliability
- Lower maintenance costs
