Placing an emergency call
Making an emergency call (emergency call system) (E-call) (with code (347a) EMERGENCY CALL (D2B) emergency call system) is based on an emergency call transmitting and receiving system via the cellular mobile telephone network and localization via the Global Positioning System (GPS) localizing system.

An emergency call can be actuated manually or automatically. Manual activation takes place by pressing the SOS pushbutton switch S93/3). Automatic activation takes place using the tilting cone sensor (B66) that is integrated in the E-call control unit (A35/8).

In case of emergency the emergency call is directly sent to the emergency call center "PESC" (Public Emergency Service Center), decoded and relayed to the relevant command center. The following information is transmitted when an emergency call is made:
- Activation method (manual or automatic)
- GPS data (position)
- Ignition ON/OFF
- Direction of travel
- Vehicle speed
- Phone number
- Serial number of emergency call unit
- Vehicle data

Position data is continuously received via the GPS receiver and put into intermediate storage in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) so that it is available when needed. The GPS localizing system can localize to an accuracy of approximately 100 m. If a voice link is active during an emergency it is maintained until help arrives.

The emergency call telegram is transmitted on the mobile radio network (Personal Digital Cellular (PDC). The PDC network in Japan is now almost nationwide The emergency call system consists of the following components:
- Mobile radio network
- Handset (optional)
- Emergency call center
- 2 telephone antennas (telephone antenna (A2/22), emergency call backup antenna (A2/50)

In order to provide a reliable PDC connection there are 2 telephone antennas (main and ancillary antenna). If an emergency call is made the "E-Call" emergency call screen is displayed. All audio output is muted, the screen display is erased and if a telephone call was being made it is disconnected.
