Risk of Explosion from Fuel Igniting

Possible hazards
Risk of explosion
When working on fuel injection systems (e.g. injection nozzles, pressure lines, rail, high pressure pump etc.) when the engine is running or within 30 seconds after switching off the engine, fuel may flow out at high pressure. If the system is opened when it is still pressurized, there is the risk of an explosion as a result of the very finely atomized fuel in combination with sources of ignition.

Injury hazard
Fuel which flows out at high pressure can penetrate deep into the skin and destroy the tissue. The fuel may in this way get into the blood and cause blood poisoning.

Rules of conduct/protective measures
- Keep sources of ignition such as sparks, cigarettes or naked flames, away from fuel.
- Do not carry out any work on the system when it is pressurized.

First aid
Clean wound
If blood poisoning is suspected, apply a tourniquet to the relevant limb or part of the body, and consult a doctor.
