AR33.10-P-0200PW Remove/Install Front Axle Half



Remove, Install Front Axle Half







DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.


CAUTION: See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts

1 Raise vehicle.
2 Remove front wheel
3 Detach hexagon collar bolt (61a) from front axle shaft (60)

NOTE: If necessary to loosen the front axle shaft (60), screw in hexagon collar bolt (61a) a few threads again and drive out the front axle (60) somewhat using a rubber-headed hammer.


4 Remove front and rear engine compartment paneling from below
5 Remove headlight range control's linkage rod from lower control arm.
- When removing the right front halfshaft on vehicles with bi-xenon headlights

6 Guide the brake line from the bracket on the strut assembly (11)
7 rotoronnect the plugs for the brake pad wear sensor and wheel speed sensor wires in the wheelhousing, then unsnap the wires from the mount

NOTE: Press against spring (arrow) to remove. The plug for the brake pad wear sensor is present on the right side only.

CAUTION: See note on installing contact sensor for brake lining wear indicator

8 Detach torsion bar linkage rod (23) from strut (11).

NOTE: Use Alien wrench to apply counterpressure to the ball joint as required.

9 Press the tie rod joint (10a) from the stub axle unit (5)
10 Remove brake caliper (33) and tie it to one side

NOTE: Do not open brake lines.

11 Installing protective washers to protect brake disk dust shields
12 Detach lower wishbone (4) from front axle carrier

CAUTION: With repair kit installed: Do not turn the repair bolt. When loosening and tightening the repair nut always hold the repair bolt in place, as the alignment studs for adjusting the caster will be sheared off if the bolt moves.

NOTE:
- Swivel the track rod upward to install and remove the rear bolt. During this process the steering must be turned all the way to the left for access at the right lower control arm (4), and all the way to the right for the left lower control arm (4).
- Installation: Not installation position if repair bolts have already been installed. Install repair bolts and shims in the same position again.

CAUTION: Installation: Do not tighten nuts under vehicle is ready to roll.

13 Pull steering knuckle assembly (5) with lower control arm (4) outward and then guide the front halfshaft (60) from the front halfshaft flange

CAUTION: Avoid damaging the rubber boots on the front halfshaft (60) and the support joint.

14 Support front halfshaft
15 Detach top of strut (11) from strut dome.
16 Remove front halfshaft.
17 Check lower control arm (4), steering knuckle assembly (5) for damage and distortion, replace as indicated.
18 Check strut assembly (11) for leaks and damage, replace as indicated
19 Install in the reverse order
