MIG Soldering

A. Soldering Materials for MIG Soldering

For strength reasons soldering material SG-CuAL8 (recommended wire diameter: 1.0 mm) must be used when performing MIG soldering of connections to structural components (as described in the WIS).

The soldering material SG-CuSi3 must be used in the case of joining methods on outer paneling parts which are then to be reworked using body solder. The soldering material SG-CuAL8 cannot be used here as it would not bind properly with the body solder on account of the aluminum component in the soldering material.

Note:
Refer to WIS AH60.00-P-0024-01N for general notes on repair of vehicles with ultra-high-strength steel

B. MIG Soldering on structure components and outer paneling

On models 204, 216 and future models MIG soldering is a joining process on structure components and on exterior paneling in production. On model 204 in the case of repair the MIG solder connections on structure components (Figure 2) are joined by a MAG weld joint. In the process it is mandatory to observe the repair instructions in WIS.

On outer panelings (side paneling) MIG soldering can also be performed as an alternative to MAG [metal active gas] welding. For this purpose the solder material Sg-CuSi3 must be used so that following adhesion and/or rework with unleaded tin-wash solder is ensured.

Changeover on current models:

In series production the MAG weld joint is successively replaced by a MIG-solder connection. In the process it is mandatory to observe the corresponding repair instructions in WIS.

Outlook on new models:

On future models MIG soldering will be introduced in production as a joining method on structure components and on outer paneling. MIG soldering will be a standard repair method on new models.

Workshop equipment:

A selection of MIG/MAG welders from various manufacturers is documented in SSEP on Star TekInfo.
