Campaign No. 2006020008, March 2006

TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CENTERS

SUBJECT:

INSPECT TRANSMISSION PILOT BUSHING AT ELECTROHYDRAULIC UNIT AND REPLACE IF NECESSARY

This service campaign has been initiated because DCAG has determined that on affected vehicles with 722.6 automatic transmissions (see VIN range below) the transmission pilot bushing may have been installed on the control units with non-tempered sealing rings which may cause a small leak to occur. Dealer will inspect the pilot bushing for a color marking and replace if necessary.

Please note this campaign must only be performed in conjunction with an A or B Service maintenance or other necessary warranty repair that requires the underbody paneling to be removed as part of the repair. Removal and re-installation of the underbody paneling is not included in the service campaign work procedure and may not be claimed separately under this service campaign.

Please review the Effective Serial Number chart, and, if necessary, repair the subject vehicles during the vehicle's next service.

Prior to performing this Service Campaign:

^ Please check VMI to insure the vehicle is involved and to determine if the vehicle has been previously repaired.

^ Please review the entire Service Campaign bulletin.

Approximately 51,934 vehicles are affected.

Effective Serial Number Range

Note:
Every vehicle in the VIN range may not be included in the campaign. VMI must always be checked before performing campaigns to verify that the campaign is required on a specific vehicle. VMI always overrides the bulletin in reference to a specific vehicle's inclusion in a particular campaign. Please also note that Recall and Service Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Procedure

A. INSPECT TRANSMISSION PILOT BUSHING AT ELECTROHYDRAULIC UNIT

Note:
Ensure the underbody paneling is removed as part of A or B Maintenance, or other necessary warranty repair requiring removal of underbody paneling, prior to starting the procedure.

1. Inspect pilot bushing for green color coding (A, Figure 1).

^ If green dot is present, this campaign has been completed.

^ If green dot is not present, proceed to SUBJECT B.

B. REPLACE TRANSMISSION PILOT BUSHING AT ELECTROHYDRAULIC UNIT

CAUTION!
Ensure the temperature of the transmission is not higher than 50°C prior to starting repairs.

Note:
If the vehicle has not been operated in a while, run the engine to fill the torque converter with transmission fluid to reduce the amount of fluid that will run out when the pilot bushing is removed.

1. ALL MODELS EXCEPT 163 AND 463: Remove heat shield (arrow, Figure 1).

2. Disconnect electrical connector at transmission.

3. Remove pilot bushing mounting bolt (Figure 2); remove pilot bushing.

Note:
When removing the pilot bushing, catch any transmission fluid that might leak out.

4. Install new pilot bushing and reassemble in reverse order.

^ Torque pilot bushing mounting bolt to 3 Nm.

^ Torque heat shield bolt to 6 Nm.

5. Mark new pilot bushing with a permanent green dot at location visible with heat shield in place (as shown in Figure 1).

Note:
Ensure the underbody paneling is reinstalled as part of A or B Maintenance, or other necessary warranty repair.

Note:
Ensure the transmission is cold (approx. 25°C) prior to performing step 6.

6. Remove breakaway locking tab from dipstick and check fluid level; the fluid level must be between the mm and max marks (A, Figure 3).

^ Refill transmission fluid to correct level. Install new pin on cap.
