AR46.10-P-0400QE Remove/Install Electrically Adjustable Jacket Tube

Remove/install Jacket Tube

DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the hydraulic hoist and position the four support plates below the hoist support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Risk of explosion from hydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury to eyes and skin suffering caustic burns from battery electrolyte or from contact with damaged lead acid batteries.
- No fire sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves clothing and glasses. Pour battery electrolyte only into suitable and appropriately marked container.

1 Disconnect ground cable of battery.

CAUTION:
- Do not connect quiescent current retention unit as this may cause disturbance to the control module.
- Installation Replace self-locking nuts and bolts.

2 Move adjustable steering column out to the full extent.

NOTE:
Necessary for separation of steering coupling (25).

3 Position steering wheel horizontal (front wheels in straight-ahead position)

CAUTION: The steering wheel must not be turned with the steering coupling (25) detached otherwise the contact spiral will be destroyed.

4 Remove engine compartment paneling
5 Unscrew bolt of steering coupling to steering shaft (25a)
6 Pull lower steering shaft (80a) up and out of steering coupling (25)

CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows, a lot of leverage) as the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to the effects of side force.

NOTE: Installation:
- Insert lower steering shaft (80a) all the way into the steering coupling (25), at the same time observe the studs of the steering coupling (25) and the groove of the lower steering shaft (80a)
- If the rack-and-pinion steering is positioned incorrectly, it must be centered again.

DANGER:
- Risk of injury. Injuries may result when performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units
- Store airbag unit with expulsion area on top, do not subject to temperatures above 100 degrees C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply

7 Remove steering wheel

CAUTION: Important instructions for performing repair, body work and welding on vehicles with airbags or belt tensioner units

8 Slacken bolt (1) of steering column module (N80)
9 Remove complete steering column module (N80) with combination switches and clock spring contact

NOTE:
- Detach steering column module (N80) with a strong pull from the steering column
- Secure clock spring contact with pin against twisting. The recess clearance is located on the clock spring contact at approx 4 o'clock. The pin is included in the repair kit of the clock spring contact.

10 Remove instrument cluster
11 Remove cover below instrument panel (left)
12 Take out absorber (foam balls) on left below instrument panel

NOTE: Removal: Pay attention to the installation position of the absorbers

13 Unscrew fuse board (2)
14 Unhinge Bowden cable of parking brake
15 Take out parking brake release lever
16 Unscrew bolt of light switch module

NOTE: The bolt is located in the recess of the parking brake release lever

17 Disconnect electrical coupling from light switch module
18 Unclip light switch module and take out

NOTE: Press together two spring links (left and right) of the light switch module

19 Unscrew bolts of instrument panel bottom section (3)
20 Disconnect electronic steering lock control module connector (N26/5)
21 Disconnect connector of longitudinal adjustment motor forward and back (M20m1) and longitudinal adjustment motor top and bottom (M20m2)
22 Unscrew bolt of reinforcement brace at jacket tube (71)
23 Loosen reinforcement brace at body and swing to the side
24 Unscrew lower bolt of steering column adjustment (91 b) at body
25 Unscrew upper bolts of steering column adjustment (91a) at body

NOTE:
- Installation:
Fit on upper bolts of steering column adjustment (91a) (the jacket tube (71) must remain a flexible length).
- Tighten at first the upper bolts of the steering column adjustment (91a).

26 Pull jacket tube (71) with lower steering shaft (80a) downward

NOTE: Until the lug (see arrow) of the steering column adjustment is extended out of the guide hole.

27 Slide jacket tube (71) with lower steering shaft (80a) downward and put down to the left.
28 Remove jacket tube (71)

NOTE:
- Carefully pull instrument panel bottom section downward and take out jacket tube (71).
- Installation: Fix joint between jacket tube (71) and lower steering shaft (80a) with masking tape (facilitates installation).
