Rough Shift Quality

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of rough 1-2, 3-2 and 2-1 gearshifts, this may be due to the specific gear not being fully adapted or there could be a mechanical cause as well.

To resolve, perform the following diagnostics.

1. Reproduce the condition and identify the affected shifts using Star Diagnosis.

2. Print out (and save) all of the adaptation data from SDS and inspect (Figure 1).

Note:
The adaptation menu can be found by following STAR Diagnosis: Control Units --> Drive --> ETC 7GTronic --> Adaptation --> Display and reset of Adaptation data --> select upshift or downshift and select the specific shift with the concern. Print the values by allowing all of the data to load and then pressing F11. Select "printout of test step" and press print. DO NOT RESET THE ADAPTATION DATA.

3. Readapt the subject shift using Star Diagnosis and again print and save the "after" adaptation results. If the shift complaint is resolved the repair process ends at this operation. If the complaint is still present after the adaptation process, compare the before and after adaptation values.

4. If the filling times of the B1 are between +/- 15 cycles, please check for any available SW updates using SDS.

5. Only if the adaptation values of the B1 and/or B3 filling times are in the -15 to -20 cycle range, proceed to step 7.

6. If the filling time cycles are +/- 20 on B2, K2 or K3, complete a WSG pre-authorization form for the replacement of a transmission. If adaptation concerns exist with K1, refer to DTB T-B-27.60/89a Cause 1.

7. If the filling time cycles of the B1 and/or B3 shift member are found to be in the -15 to -20 range, the cause may be an incorrectly installed circlip on the B1 and/or B3 return spring. Remove the transmission from the vehicle and proceed with the repair of both the B1 and B3 shift member as outlined in WIS AR27.50-P-0870W. Replace both the circlip and the disc spring together.

Note:
There are now two different versions of multi-disc brake B1 and B3 (Figures 2, 3 and 4). It is critical to properly identify which brake the transmission is fitted with so that the correct circlip may be installed.

Note:
When reassembling the transmission, make certain to properly engage the thrust washer locking tabs in their respective grooves and see that the bearing face of the thrust washer is facing in the proper direction (Figure 5).

8. After the repair to the B1 or a HW/SW update has been completed reset the adaptation values and readapt the complete transmission (print and save all adaptation sheets).
