Squealing / Squeaking Noises When Steering in Both Directions

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of squealing or squeaking noises when steering in both directions when the engine is warm, the cause may be due to insufficient lubrication at the lower radial shaft sealing ring in the control head.

Note:
This complaint only occurs on Models 203/209 with standard steering and on Models 215/220 (all steering variants).

To resolve, replace bottom radial shaft sealing ring of control head.

1. Remove steering gear. Refer to the following applicable WIS document

^ For Model 203 (except 203.081/084/281/284) and Model 209 - AR46.20-P-0600P

^ For Model 203.081/084/281/284 - AR46.20-P-0600PW

^ For Models 215 and 220 - AR46.20-P-06001

^ Model 220.179 - AR46.20-P-0600M

2. Replace lower radial shaft sealing ring on control head. Refer to WIS document AR46.20-P-G0003Q.

3. Adjust play between thrust piece and steering rack. Refer to WIS document AR46.20-P-0601P.

4. Install steering gear. Refer to the following applicable WIS document

^ For Model 203 (except 203.081108412811284) and Model 209 - AR46.20-P-0600P

^ For Model 203.081/084/281/284 - AR46.20-P-0600PW

^ For Models 215 and 220 - AR46.20-P-06001

Note:
The high-pressure line has two versions. The preceding version has a slotted support ring that can be replaced individually if damaged. The newer version has a support ring which is not slotted and if damaged on one of the new line versions only the complete power steering high pressure line can be replaced (see parts list).

5. Check function of rack-and-pinion steering

^ When turning steering wheel from lock to lock several times

^ When cornering slowly

^ When cornering rapidly

^ Visually check the system for leaks
