GF42.45-P-0001-04SL Electronic stability program (ESP), driver information

Component Identification:

Displays with various symbols are located in the instrument cluster (A1) for the ESP and SBC.

Switching on ignition and starting engine
When the ignition is switched on (ignition switch in position 2) the warning and indicator lamps light up in the instrument cluster (A1) (bulb check) and go out when the engine is running.

Driving mode
In driving mode the ESP and ABS warning lamp (A1e41) flashes as soon as the ABS or ESP operates. It notifies the driver that the control mode is active and warns when a wheel is beginning to spin and the vehicle is approaching its physical handling limits.

As a result the driving style can be better adapted to the road conditions. As of the end of the closed-loop operation the ESP and ABS warning lamp (A1e41) continues flashing for approx. 1 s. In the event of a very short ESP-closed-loop operation the ESP and ABS warning lamp (A1e41) does not light up.

Indicator lamp and multifunction display evaluation

ABS indicator lamp (A1e17)
This lamp is actuated when there is a fault in the ABS system. ABS, ESP, and BAS are no longer available. Normal brake function is maintained. The malfunction is also displayed in left multifunction display (A1p13) and right multifunction display (A1p15).

With under voltage < 10 V the ABS indicator lamp (A1e17) likewise lights up and the system is switched off. The lamp extinguishes once the voltage rises again.

ESP and ABS warning lamp (A1e41)
In driving mode the ESP and ABS warning lamp (A1e41) flashes as soon as the ABS or ESP operates. It notifies the driver that the ABS or ESP control mode is active and warns when a wheel is beginning to spin and the vehicle is approaching its physical handling limits.

As a result the driving style can be better adapted to the road conditions.

As of the end of an ABS or ESP closed-loop operation the ESP and ABS warning lamp continues flashing for approx. (A1e41) 1 s. In the event of a very short ESP-closed-loop operation the ESP and ABS warning lamp (A1e41) does not light up.

Interpreting multifunction displays (A1p13 and A1p15)
Malfunctions in the individual subsystems are displayed in the left multifunction display (A1p13) and right multifunction display in the (A1pl5) instrument cluster (A1).

The fault is stored in the respective control unit and can be read out using the diagnosis tool.

ESP OFF switch (N72s14)
If the vehicle is driven in deep snow with snow chains fitted, the sensitive, stability-oriented control of the ESP may have an unfavorable effect on the vehicle's start-off characteristics.

In such cases, the ESP can be deactivated. The drive torque control loop is then no longer active. Whilst driving off up to a speed of 40 km/h, a one-sided brake intervention can be effective. When the ESP Off switch is operated (N72s14) the ESP and ABS warning lamp (A1e41) in the instrument cluster (A1) lights up permanently. It is to remind the driver that the ESP is switched off. If one or both drive wheels spin, then the ESP and ABS warning lamp (A1e41) flashes. This applies across the entire vehicle speed range.
