General
The electrically adjustable steering column (EVL) realizes the following functions:
^ Adjust steering column
- manual adjustment
- Storage and calling up of steering column positions
^ Easy entry/exit (the driver seat is adjusted in addition to the steering column)

Manual adjustment
The longitudinal position and height of the steering column is manually adjustable by the steering column adjustment motor group via the steering column up/down, fore/aft switch (S59/1s1) on the steering column module (N80)(M20).

Calling up positions
The steering column, driver seat and the outside mirrors are adjusted into the stored position via the memory switch 1, 2, 3 (S91/2s14) in the left front seat adjustment switch group (S91/2).

Storing positions
Operate the memory switch (S91/2s9) briefly and within 3 s operate the corresponding position key of the memory switch. The current position of the steering column, driver seat and outside mirrors are stored.

On vehicles as of 1.6.07 an acoustic feedback sounds via the warning buzzer integrated in the instrument cluster (A1) when storing the steering column positions (A1h1).

Easy entry/exit
The easy entry/exit function makes it easier to get in and out of the vehicle by adjusting the steering column into the upper position and adjusting the driver seat into the rear position.

Position measurement and blockage detection
For position measurement and blockage detection Hall sensors are located on the steering column adjustment motor group.

The signals from the Hall sensors read in and evaluated by the driver-side front seat adjustment control unit with memory (N32/1). If blocking is detected the actuation is terminated after approx. 2.5 s. Switching on again in the same adjustment direction is only permitted after releasing the steering column adjustment switch or the memory switch for more than approx. 2.5 s. Adjustment in the opposite direction is possible immediately.
