Component Identification:
Overall ADS function
The "Adaptive Damping System" (ADS) adapts to the damping forces of the road surface condition and driving style.
The signals of the three acceleration sensors at left front (B24/3), right front (B24/4), and right rear (B24/6) are used by the AIRmatic with ADS control unit (N51) to determine vertical speed. The signals of the wheel speeds and steering angle sensor (N49) are used to calculate longitudinal and lateral acceleration. The left front axle damping valve unit (Y51) and right front axle damping valve units (Y52), left (Y53) and right rear axles (Y54) enable the AIRmatic with ADS control unit to regulate the damping forces for each individual wheel. Each individual damping valve unit can thus be actuated using a different characteristic.
The extremely short adjusting time (milliseconds) means that an optimum damping force setting is available almost immediately if sudden changes in the vehicle level are required, such as during an obstacle-avoidance maneuver.
Evaluation of the stop lamp switch signal enables brake applications to be quickly detected and any vehicle pitch motion to be reduced through suitable damper settings.
With the comfort and sport switch (N72s25) the driver can choose between either a comfort-oriented or 2 sporty performance maps. The "comfort" setting maintains the damping within the comfortable range as far as the driving style and road conditions will allow. The "Sport 1" setting makes the damping somewhat "harder". The "Sport 2" setting shifts the damping faster to a somewhat "harder" rating. At a speed in excess of 40 km/h in "Sport 2" the suspension is also constantly set to hard (auxiliary air volume off). Similarly the level control for Sport 1 and 2 lowers the vehicle level by 10 or 15 mm.
The damping force setting is regulated in the damping valve units. Each wheel has one damping valve unit installed between the upper and lower chambers of the single-pipe gas-filled shock absorber.
Function shown on left front axle suspension strut (40)
The damping force setting is regulated in the left front axle damping valve unit. The front axle damping valve unit on the left front wheel is located between the upper and lower chambers of the single-pipe gas-filled shock absorber. The damping valve unit contains the solenoid valve 1, left front (Y51y1) and Solenoid valve 2, front left (Y51y2), which provide 4 different damping force settings depending on actuation by the AIRmatic control unit.
