General
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) is the central control for the entertainment and communication systems integrated in the vehicle.

Function requirements
^ Status "Circuit 30 ON" or "Circuit 15R ON"
^ The COMAND operating, display and controller unit is authorized and in perfect working order

The following functions are integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit:
^ Radio
^ Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (DAB), with code 537 Digital radio and code 833 Great Britain version
^ SDARS satellite radio, with code 536 SIRIUS satellite radio and code 494 USA version
^ Compact Disk (CD)/Digital Versatile Disk (DVD) audio
^ CD/DVD video
^ Music register
^ Navigation operation with code 512 COMAND APS including DVD changer, or with code 527 COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation system)
^ Telephone operation via Bluetooth (basic telephony) or with code 386 Preinstallation for telephone "Cell phone", UPCI [UHI] system (comfort telephony) (except code 494 USA version)
^ Media interface function, with code 518 Media interface
^ Television (TV) with code 863 Digital/analog TV tuner (except code 494 USA version)
^ Audio signal control (volume and tone setting)
^ Voice control

The displays and menus for the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are generated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

The following applications are displayed on the instrument cluster as well as being displayed on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A1):
- Audio
- Telephone
- Navigation, with code 512 COMAND APS including DVD changer, or with code 527 COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation system)

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit acts as a gateway. It routes the signals from the class B Controller Area Network bus (interior) (CAN-B) to the components of the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) and thereby forms the communications interface (master).

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit communicates with the following control units via MOST:
- Amplifier for sound system control unit (N40/3), with code 810 Sound system
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3), with code 537 Digital radio and code 833 Great Britain version
- SDAR control unit (N87/5), with code 536 SIRIUS satellite radio and code 494 USA version
- TV combination tuner (analog/digital) (A90/1), with code 863 Digital/analog TV tuner
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) and media interface electrical connector 1 (X18/67), with code (518) Media interface
