MODEL 219, MODEL YEAR 2006
PROGRAMMING BATTERY CONTROL MODULE

This Service Campaign has been initiated because DCAG has determined that on the affected vehicles (see VIN range below) implausible or illogical messages can appear in the instrument cluster which will result in certain electrical consumers being shut down. This is caused by the battery control unit erroneously evaluating the battery charge level as good when the actual charge level may be insufficient.

Please review the Effective Serial Number chart located below and if necessary repair the subject vehicles during the vehicle's next service.

Prior to performing this Service Campaign:

^ Please check VMI to insure the vehicle is involved and to determine if the vehicle has been previously repaired.

^ Please review the entire Service Campaign bulletin.

Approximately 152,949 vehicles are affected

Procedure

1. Connect battery charger to vehicle's battery:

CAUTION!
Battery charger must be connected to vehicle's battery to ensure battery voltage of > 12.5 V or battery control module may become inoperable during programming.

^ Models 211.0/219 refer to WIS: AR54.10-P-1130T, step 3.1

Note:
Negative cable of battery charger must be connected at the bolt-on point (body ground) for the battery control module and must not be connected directly to the battery terminal.

^ Model 211.2: Battery charger cables must be connected at the jump-starting point in the engine compartment (refer to vehicle Operator's Manual) and must not be directly connected to the battery terminals.

2. Switch ignition ON.

3. Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS to the vehicle using the 16-pin diagnostic connector (X11/4).

Note:

^ The DAS steps must be followed exactly as described in this Procedure!

^ Before performing the Procedure, ensure that the DAS version 05/05 or later is installed on SDS.

CAUTION!
If programming is aborted, the battery control module will become inoperable.

4. Navigate through the following menu items to select the battery control unit (module):
"Control units/Body/Battery control unit".

5. After the "Battery control unit" menu item has been selected DAS checks whether the battery control unit has to be programmed.

^ If DAS indicates that the control unit has to be programmed, continue with the F3 "YES" key.

^ If it does not need to be programmed, the "Standard control unit menu selection" for the "Battery control unit is displayed. In this case, continue with step 7.

6. Program "Battery control unit".

Note:

^ If "SDflash release directory" is requested, the hard drive as well as the DVD drive can be selected (flash software is identical in both directories).

^ If Battery control unit becomes inoperable due to normal programming procedures, replace battery control unit and re-flash control unit if necessary.

^ Battery control unit replacement for Models 211.0- Refer to WIS: AR54.21-P-0100T

^ Battery control unit replacement for Models 211.2- Refer to WIS: AR54.21-P-0100TA

^ Battery control unit replacement for Models 219.3- Refer to WIS: AR54.21-P-0100TX
