AR32.20-P-0300T Remove/Install Torsion Bar on Front Axle

DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Risk of injury. Moving parts can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases even sever extremities.
- Keep body parts and limbs well clear of moving parts.

NOTE: Installation: Tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components only in curb condition.

1 Empty front air springs using STAR DIAGNOSIS
- With Airmatic, code (489a)

2.1 Remove trim panel for cylinder head cover and for charge air distribution pipe
2.2 Remove air cleaner housing with air ducts

NOTE:
- Pull air cleaner housing vertically upwards off the rubber retainers on the cylinder head covers.
- Installation: Smear the retaining rubbers on the cylinder head covers and seal of the hot film mass air flow sensor in the air cleaner housing with lubricant.

3 Mount engine supporting frame
4.1 Remove bottom part of noise encapsulation
4.2 Remove engine compartment paneling
5 Unscrew bolts (14) of left and right front engine mount from front axle carrier (6)
6 Raise engine

CAUTION: On model 211.061/261/065/275/070/ 270 ensure that the hot film mass air flow sensor does not touch the body. Do not over-tension lines and hoses. These components can become damaged.

7 Unscrew nuts (23b) and remove link rods (23) from torsion bar (10).
- Check rubber mounts of link rod (23) for damage, replace link rod (23) if necessary otherwise the chassis will be damaged.

8 Support front axle carrier (6).

CAUTION: When working on the front axle, take care to prevent leaving scratches, cracks or notches in the surfaces of the aluminum components. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be reduced.

9 Unscrew bolts (8a) and (8b) from front axle carrier (6)
10 Lower front axle carrier (6)

CAUTION: Do not stretch the steering coupling (12).

11 Unscrew bolts (21e) and remove retaining bracket (21b)

NOTE: Installation: The retaining brackets (21b) of the torsion bar (10) must be replaced.

12 Take off torsion bar (10)
13 Install in the reverse order
14 Carry out chassis alignment check.
