AR32.20-P-0315T Remove/Install Torsion Bar on Rear Axle
- with CODE (489) AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension)

Shown On Model 211 With Airmatic:






DANGER:
- Risk of fatal accident if the vehicle slips off the lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Risk of injury with trapped or crushed body parts, risk of injury to skin and eyes due to brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system.
- Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
- Risk of injury with trapped or crushed fingers when working on springs or spring-loaded components
- Use only approved tensioning devices; additionally shield off hazardous area if necessary.
- Inspect special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection).
- Wear protective gloves.


CAUTION:
- When working on the rear axle, take care to avoid leaving scratches, cracks or notches in the surfaces of the aluminum components. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be reduced.

1 Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS
2 Empty left and right rear air springs (6i) using STAR DIAGNOSIS
- With AIRmatic, code (489a)

CAUTION: Installation: Always fill the rear air springs in the KO position otherwise they will be irreparably damaged!

3 Remove crossmember (35)
4.1 Remove rear muffler
4.2 Remove exhaust system from flange connection onwards
4.3 Remove exhaust system complete
5 Remove underbody paneling

NOTE: Only rear sections.

6 Unscrew heat shields (105d, 105e) and push towards the rear
7 Detach propeller shaft (106) from rear axle center assembly (50)

NOTE: The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft.

8 Loosen fitted sleeves in flexible couplings on flange
9 Unscrew bolts for propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a) and remove rear half of propeller shaft (106)

NOTE: Installation:
- Assemble the propeller shaft in the correct position.
- Tighten flexible coupling on rear axle center assembly before tightening bolts on propeller shaft intermediate bearing

10 Remove rear brake cables

NOTE: Do not remove the rear brake cables from the wheel carrier.

11 Remove rear wheels
12 Remove rear brake pads

CAUTION: Hang the brake caliper up with a hook to relieve the strain on the brake hose.

13 Remove fender liner from rear fender
- With Airmatic, code (489a)

14 Unplug electrical connectors for brake and chassis components from rear axle
- With Airmatic, code (489a)

15 Unclip electrical feed cables (arrows) of left and right rear axle speed sensors and brake pad wear sensor from all retaining clips
- Except Airmatic, code (489a)

16 Unclip left and right air springs (6i) from frame floor using assembly lever
- With Airmatic, code (489a)

17 Detach shock absorber (6) from spring links
18 Remove rear springs
- Except Airmatic, code (489a)

19 Clamp off filler hose (17) of fuel tank
- Except Airmatic, code (489a)

DANGER
- Risk of explosion from fuel igniting, risk of poisoning from inhaling and swallowing fuel as well as risk of injury to eyes and skin from contact with fuel.
- No fire, sparks, naked flames or smoking. Pour fuels only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.
- Wear protective clothing when handling fuel.


20 Disconnect filler hose (17) of fuel tank from filler neck (17a)
- With Airmatic, code (489a)

CAUTION: Collect escaping fuel in a suitable container!

- Check filler hose and hose clamps, if necessary empty fuel tank and replace filler hose.

21 Install guard plates
- With Airmatic, code (489a)

22 Lower rear axle

CAUTION: Except Airmatic, code (489a): Lower rear axle no more than 100 mm. Do not damage filler hose (17) of fuel tank.

23 Detach linkage of level sensor from rear torsion bar
- With Airmatic, code (489a)

24 Detach torsion bar (77) from left and right connecting rods (6k) of torsion bar
25 Detach left and right bearings (77b) of torsion bar (77) from rear axle carrier (1)
26 Remove torsion bar (77)
- Except Airmatic, code (489a): Remove torsion bar towards right wheelhouse.

27 Detach left and right connecting rods (6k) of torsion bar from wheel carrier (7)

NOTE: If necessary.

28 Replace retaining clips for air springs
29 Install in the reverse order
30 Check rear axle center assembly oil level and correct if necessary
31 Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS
32 Use STAR DIAGNOSIS to move brake pads toward brake discs
33 Carry out chassis alignment check.
