Spark plug a or b of cylinder 2 or ECI ignition module, right bank of cylinders (N92/1)

Test 1: Test component R4 (Spark plugs) A or B and component N92/1 (ECI ignition module, right bank of cylinders) and N92/2 (ECI ignition module, left bank of cylinders), respectively.

1. Test component R4 (Spark plugs) A or B and component N92/1 (ECI ignition module, right bank of cylinders) and N92/2 (ECI ignition module, left bank of cylinders), respectively.

Test 1.1: Cylinder 2

1.1. Cylinder 2
Test ignition system.
Warning!Hazard as a result of high voltage at the ignition system!

- Electronic ignition systems operate within a hazardous power range both at the low voltage side (primary circuit) as well as on the high voltage side (secondary circuit).
- Contacts with such parts can result in burns, heart flutter or cardiac arrest.
Particular hazards in the case of ECI ignition system

- Component N91 (ECI ignition system mains unit) has an integrated mains unit which produces the voltage of 180 V when the ignition is switched on, and which also is supplied to components N92/1 (ECI ignition module, right bank of cylinders) and N92/2 (ECI ignition module, left bank of cylinders). This voltage drops only slowly after the ignition is switched off and reaches a non-hazardous level only after 3 min has elapsed.
Rules of conduct and protective measures

- Persons with heart pacemakers must not perform any work on the ignition system.
- Switch off the ignition when performing work on the ignition system.
- Do not touch any parts of the ignition system when starting the engine or when the engine is running.
- Wear protective shoes with rubber soles.
Continue with button F2

Test prerequisite :

- Remove component N92/1 (ECI ignition module, right bank of cylinders).
- Carry out a visual inspection of the seals of the ignition coils.
Question:

- Are there traces of smoldering visible at the seals of the ignition coils of cylinder 2?

YES
There are traces of smoldering visible at the seals of the ignition coils of cylinder 2.Additional information :The insulator of one or both spark plugs of cylinder 2 may be damaged.Possible cause and remedy:

- Replace component N92/1 (ECI ignition module, right bank of cylinders) and seals of ignition coils of cylinder 1 through cylinder 6.
End of test

NO
Test prerequisite :

- Component N92/1 (ECI ignition module, right bank of cylinders) is removed.
- Carry out a visual inspection of the seals of the ignition coils.
Question:

- Does illuminating the ignition coils (rubber seals removed) reveal chipping, wear or signs of burning on the lower face at the black plastic tower?

YES
With the rubber seals removed, chipping, wear or signs of burning can be seen on the lower face at the black plastic tower.Additional information :The insulator of one or both spark plugs of cylinder 1 may be damaged.Possible cause and remedy:

- Replace component N92/1 (ECI ignition module, right bank of cylinders) and seals of ignition coils of cylinder 1 through cylinder 6.
End of test

NO
Test prerequisite :

- Component N92/1 (ECI ignition module, right bank of cylinders) is removed.
Question:

- Is an ignition module with part number A 000 150 2080 / 2180 installed?

YES
An ignition module with part number A 000 150 2080 / 2180 is installed.Possible cause and remedy:

- Install ignition module with part number A 275 150 0480 / 0580.
End of test

NO
Test prerequisite :

- Remove both spark plugs of cylinder 2.
- Check electrode gap.
- Specified distance: 0.7 mm
Question:Is the electrode gap of the spark plugs of cylinder 2 correct?

YES
The electrode gap of the spark plugs is o.k.Test prerequisite

- Inspect spark plugs of cylinder 2 for oil residues.
Question:Are oil residues recognizable at the spark plugs?

YES
Possible cause and remedy:Inspect engine for internal oil consumption and rectify cause if necessary.End of test

NO
Check cylinder for oil drag-in.
Test prerequisite

- Inspect cylinder with light probe as per WIS document 'AR01.00-P-0200AU'.
- If case of oil drag-in, carry out mechanical tests.
- Perform compression test as per WIS document 'AR01.00-P-1200L'.
- Perform pressure loss test as per WIS document 'AR01.00-P-1300HV'.
- Check cylinder barrel as per WIS document 'AR01.00-P-1300HV'.
- Pay attention to STIP SI01.40-P-0001B!
In case of oil drag-in into the cylinder, determine cause.AR01.00-P-1300HV

- Valves
- Valve stem guide and (or) seal
- Visual inspection of the piston
- Check crankcase ventilation system.

Check intake valve.
Test sequence

- Remove valve cover.
- Turn engine in direction of engine rotation.
- Visually inspect valve synchronization
NOTE

- If visual inspection reveals obvious defect, repairs are required.
END OF TEST

NO
The electrode gap of the spark plugs is not o.k.Possible cause and remedy:Component R4 (Spark plugs)End of test
