Remove/Install

DANGER:
- Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Risk of explosion from explosive gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury through burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries
- No fire, sparks, naked flames or smoking.
- Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses. Pour battery electrolyte only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.


1 Disconnect ground cable of battery

CAUTION: Model 209: Do not connect quiescent current retention unit, otherwise damage may occur in the control module.

DANGER:
- Risk of explosion from fuel igniting, risk of poisoning from inhaling and swallowing fuel as well as risk of injury to eyes and skin from contact with fuel.
- No fire, sparks, naked flames or smoking.
- Pour fuels only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.
- Wear protective clothing when handling fuel.


2 Drain fuel tank.
- Pay attention to fuel quantity.
- Fuel tank capacity, Total capacity = 62 Liters
Reserve capacity = 8 Liters

3 Remove floor coverings (12)
4 Remove rear axle.
5 Remove end cover (1) of body
6 Disconnect connector (2) of fuel level sensor, left half of tank (B4/1)
7 Detach hand brake cable (4) at relay lever (5)
8 Pull outer cable (6) out of fixture

NOTE: Press together the two catches (arrows) for this step.

9 Remove right rear wheelhousing liner (7)
- See Remove inner fender from rear fender

10 Take off hose clamps (8)

NOTE: Installation: check hose clamps (8), replace if necessary.

11 Detach fuel lines (9)

CAUTION: In the event of fixed fuel lines (9) cut these with a knife and then detach. There is a risk of fixed fuel lines (9) shearing off the connections at the tank.

12 Undo bolt (10) of filler pipe (11)
13 Detach fuel line (13) at fuel filter (14)
- Clamp: See Special Tools below.

CAUTION: Installation: check hose clamp (15) and fuel line (13), replace if necessary, to rule out any leakages.

14 Remove shroud (16)
15 Support fuel tank (17)
16 Unscrew retaining straps (18) at the body

Retaining straps of tank to underfloor = 20 Nm
M18 = 60 NM

17 Remove fuel tank (17)

NOTE: After removing the fuel tank, tie up propeller shaft (19) using a cable strap.

18 Install in the reverse order
19 Dispose of fuel tank
- Only if necessary.
