GF82.30-P-0003Q Windshield Wiper System (WSA), Function

Component Identification:

Function prerequisites for all wiper system functions
^ Circuit 15R "ON" (via the electronic ignition switch control module (N73))
^ Front doors closed (via left door contact switch and right door contact switch which are read in by the rear SAM control module with fuse and relay module)

System functions of wiper system
^ Windshield wiper control
^ Washing windshield
^ Headlamp cleaning (on vehicles with code (600a) headlamp cleaning system)

Switch request and wipe function
The front SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/1) converts the selected wiper stage at the combination switch (S4) directly into a speed specification for the wiper. Only in the "Intermittent/rain sensor mode" position of the combination switch (S4) is the speed specified through the overhead control panel control module (N70) by the rain/light sensor (B38/2).
Information from the combination switch (S4) and the requests from the overhead control panel control module (N70) are made available to the front SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/1) via CAN class B.

The following functions are possible:
^ Touch wiping: A single wipe is performed. To do this, push the combination switch (S4) to the detent.
^ Intermittent wiping and intermittent wiping with automatic intermittent wipe control via the rain/light sensor (B38/2). To do this, turn the combination switch (S4) to position "1".
^ Low-speed wiping (stage 1).
To do this, turn the combination switch (S4) to position "2".
^ High-speed wiping (stage 2).
To do this, turn the combination switch (S4) to position "3".
^ Washing: The windshield is wiped with additional water.
To do this, push the combination switch (S4) beyond detent.
^ Automatically switching on the washer nozzle heater/washer nozzle hose heater.

Safety switch-off for windshield wiper system
The following safety precautions have been taken in order to minimize the risk of injuries:
^ If the engine hood is opened at a speed less than 5 km/h, the wiper function is interrupted immediately. The wipers can operate again only after the engine hood has been closed.
^ With a defective ATA [EDW] hood switch (S62) (engine hood apparently open) and a speed of greater than 8 km/h, the wiper function is not interrupted until the speed drops below 5 km/h. A wiper function cannot be executed again until the switch defect has been eliminated or the speed exceeds 8 km/h.

The conditions ensure that the wipers operate when driving even when the ATA hood switch (S62) is defective or in the event of wiring problems.

^ When a front door is opened and the wipers are not in the end position when c. 15R is switched on, wiper startup is suppressed. The position of the combination switch (S4) is of no relevance in this connection.

For the safety shutoff, the door contact switches on left and right and the ATA [EDW] hood switch (S62) are read in by the rear SAM control module with fuse and relay module and relayed via CAN-class B to the front SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/1).
The vehicle speed signal, determined by the left front rpm sensor (L6/1), passes via CAN-class B from the instrument cluster (A1) to the front SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/1).
