GF91.60-P-4003-02R Passenger Airbag, Function

Component Identification:

Function prerequisites:
The two ignition squibs of the front passenger airbag can be triggered, if:
^ The front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48) has detected that the front passenger seat is occupied.
^ When a certain accident severity exists.

Operating procedure
^ Depending on the severity of the impact an electrical ignition pulse is output from the restraint systems control module (N2/7) to the passenger airbag ignition squib 1 (R12/4) and passenger airbag ignition squib 2 (R12/5) of the gas generator. The type of crash involved determines whether the detonators are ignited simultaneously or in stages.
^ The ignition squib is ignited. A high pressure is created in the process which transmits itself to the corresponding pressure chamber (1).
^ The bursting disk (3) breaks due to the pressure rise in pressure chamber (1). Now the gas mixture stored in the pressure chamber (1) can escape via the outlet channel (2). The airbag inflates.
^ The airbag unfolds under the pressure of the inflowing gases. The airbag flap is torn open at the predetermined fracture points over the glove compartment and the airbag unfolds completely, the front passenger is caught by the front passenger airbag.
^ The airbag reaches its maximum volume after approx. 35 ms.
^ Once maximum volume is reached, pressure is decreased in the airbag immediately. The gas escapes from the airbag via a filter and the airbag folds up.

As once the front passenger airbag has triggered, it cannot be recognized whether both the ignition stages have triggered, the airbag unit must be disposed of accordingly. In Germany disposal is possible through the Mercedes-Benz Recycling System "MeRSy". The corresponding legal requirements should be observed in all other countries.
