Complaint:

Grunting/creaking noise from the area of the rear axle when driving over road undulations (see 1.mp3).

Important:
Grunting/creaking noises may be weather/temperature-related.

Attachments

Cause:

Corrosion in the foot joint of one of the rear air suspension struts.

Remedy:

Detach lower mounting of air suspension strut and rock the vehicle. If grunting/creaking noises can no longer be heard, replace the relevant foot joint on the rear air suspension strut.

It is not necessary to replace the suspension strut!

If the noises are still audible with the lower connection detached, look for a different cause.

Note:
The occurrence of these noises may be temperature-related. If the noise is not reproducible, ask the customer to clarify whether the noise occurs in cold weather or after driving for some time. Depending on the customer's information, either leave the vehicle parked in the cold or warm up the vehicle in order to reproduce/localize the noise.

Current knowledge indicates that these noises do not come from either the outer supporting joint at the wheel carrier or from the rubber mount of the spring control arm on the subframe.

Before performing any work at these locations, always replace the foot joint of the suspension strut (see 1.jpg).
