GF27.20-P-5102ACW Torque Converter Lockup Clutch, Component Description
GF27.20-P-5102ACW Torque converter lockup clutch, component description
- TRANSMISSION 722.618/640/646/695/699
Component Identification:
Location
The torque converter lockup clutch is integrated in the torque converter (A).
Task
The torque converter lockup clutch minimizes the power losses of the torque converter (A) by reducing converter slip. The engine speed reduces as a result and the efficiency of the transmission is improved.

Design

The external plate carrier (16a) is connected to the impeller (4) via the torque converter housing (17). The internal plate carrier (16b) is connected to the turbine wheel (2).
Function
In the event of an actuation triggered by the electronic transmission control unit (N15/3) oil pressure controlled by the torque converter lockup clutch control solenoid valve (Y3/6y6) is lead through the drive shaft (1) to the pressure chamber behind the piston (16d).
The piston (16d) compresses the clutch pack (16c) and therefore enables direct torque transmission between the impeller (4) and turbine wheel (2).
The torque converter lockup clutch is engaged in all gears to match the engine speed and engine load. The torsional damper (16e) absorbs the vibrations emanating from the engine. This improves comfort for the driver and saves wear and tear on the mechanical components of the transmission.
